New Global Analysis Offers Encouraging News - Conservation is Working: The first-ever planet-wide scientific review has found that the significant money and effort poured into protecting biodiversity is yielding measurable results. Contrary to the bleak narrative of endless species declines, this landmark study shows that when conservation actions are taken - from eradicating invasive species to restoring habitats - they often lead to outcomes many times greater than doing nothing. Today is Bird Day! 🌱 With #Biodiversity in crisis - action is required to protect species from extinction and ecosystems from severe degradation. A recent first-of-its kind study co-authored by BirdLife International scientists and published in Science Magazine has found that conservation actions are effectively halting and reversing #Biodiversity loss. Evaluating a wide range of conservation interventions across the globe against outcomes, here are some of the key findings: 🌎 Conservation actions improved the state of biodiversity or slowed its decline in most (66%) of the cases compared with no action taken at all 🌎 When the interventions work, they are highly effective “This new analysis is the best evidence to date that conservation interventions make a difference, slowing the loss of species’ populations and habitats and enabling them to recover.” - Stuart Butchart, co-author and chief scientist, BirdLife International #NaturalCapital 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/d8W4AmeK

Ocean Biodiversity System
Did you know that UNESCO hosts the world's largest marine biodiversity database? The Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) offers open access to a wealth of collectively-sourced data and information on marine biodiversity, to foster conservation and sustainable development. Let's cheer for the scientific efforts out there helping us manage our ocean so it continues to brim with amazing life for generations to come! Learn more about OBIS 👉 https://lnkd.in/ethP46FP

To celebrate #WorldWildlifeDay2024 🌎🐾, let's appreciate cheetahs' crucial role in ecosystems. As apex predators, cheetahs help regulate prey populations. Their presence contributes to maintaining ecological balance and preserving biodiversity. Moreover, the cheetah is often considered an umbrella or flagship species. Their presence or absence can indicate the overall health of the ecosystem they inhabit. Conservation efforts benefit not only cheetahs and their habitats but entire ecosystems. Very important issue. The #design of #private_gardens is usually depends on the client's wishes and we can not argue about it.. But we must explain and educate the client why we should think in the direction of more and more natural design. I personally stopped working with private gardens over 5 years ago for the same reason. I worked in the professional landscape company, I liked that team, but unfortunately, the design we were "pushed" to provide at that time, often, was not making any difference, and argumentation оf our landscape team haven't had an influence ...The market worked like this. Unfortunately. Right now, sometimes, I have requests for private garden design and I'm starting the relationships with client from a mini-lecture regarding natural design and natural approaches🤭. Just to see іf we can be on the same wave. More and more people agree with it. But the majority don't. In my opinion, we should have more regulations regarding #NBS, even in private gardening area, because it is not a philosophy, or fancy approach no longer, it is a need. We operate in the nature, with natural resources and we need to take responsibility for it. #garden_design #landscape_architecture #nbs #natural_approaches
Despite our best efforts, our backyards are often death traps for insects. Human activities have brought about the sixth mass extinction event and conservation alone will not save species from decline; habitat must be stitched into our cities. LAF Fellow Betsy Peterson's Biodiversity Victory Garden movement offers simple actions to activate home gardens and interstitial, urban spaces into a rich network for biodiversity. "We conducted a global meta-analysis of 186 studies (including 665 trials) that measured biodiversity over time and compared outcomes under conservation action with a suitable counterfactual of no action. . . . we find that interventions targeted at species and ecosystems, such as invasive species control, habitat loss reduction and restoration, protected areas, and sustainable management, are highly effective and have large effect sizes. This provides the strongest evidence to date that conservation actions are successful but require transformational scaling up to meet global targets." -Study published in Science April 2024. https://lnkd.in/ejj9UVGm #BiodiversityConservation #ConservationEffectiveness

⚠️A shocking 81% of habitats in Europe are in a poor state.⚠️ The goals of the EU Biodiversity Strategy are at risk because there’s not enough money for nature conservation. We urge the European Commission to increase funding for biodiversity in the future EU budget. 🔎Read our joint statement: https://lnkd.in/gfG_HsJ2

My research is focused in two main areas, the Fish Pass, fish migration patterns and conservation of freshwater fish species and secondly the patterns and processes underlying the distribution of biodiversity in human-impacted environments.

🦊 ☘ The coming months mark a key opportunity to increase financing for biodiversity conservation and restoration across the EU during the negotiations on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). EU biodiversity financing should be based on 3 pillars: 1. A dedicated biodiversity conservation and restoration fund in the next MFF 2. Strengthening biodiversity mainstreaming through all EU funding programmes 3. Preventing EU funds from financing investments that damage biodiversity. Read the joint statement in the link below 👇 :
