📸 We've watched Instagram go from a new app to a huge network that's used by 2.35 billion active users. 🚀 We start our timeline in 2010, when the app began is a mobile-only app for sharing photos. It hits a million users within two months, become a quick rival to Facebook. 📱In 2012, the app becomes available on Android (expanding it's already significant user base) and becomes acquired by Facebook, but the platforms remain separate. 💥 Creativity booms on Instagram in 2013 as it implements video sharing. By 2015, the app already has 400 million monthly users. In the meantime, Snapchat is gaining popularity, especially with young kids! 👻 Instagram Stories launch in 2016, becoming as popular as its inspiration. 📺️ From 2018-2019, big changes come to the app like IGTV (which is no longer available), shopping features to help businesses grow online, and the number of active users reaches 1 billion! ▶️ Instagram starts to consider TikTok as serious competition in 2021 and launches Reels to keep users on their app. 👩💻 Since 2021, Instagram has been focusing on Meta branding and implementing features that are unique to the app — like Notes, Channels, Group Profiles, and more. The innovative Instagram team continues to adjust the algorithm and tweak its features, and creators are regularly changing up their content to keep up. What does this mean❓ 🔜 TikTok is developing an app similar to Instagram (or rather, the early days of Instagram when the focus was on photos). Do you think it will be successful? TikTok has quietly launched a NEW photo-sharing app to rival Instagram called “Whee” 📲 🤯 The description for the app highlights that it is designed specifically for sharing photos with friends and family, rather than for creators to build audiences, stating “Capture and share real-life photos that only your friends can see, allowing you to be your most authentic self,” and “Whee is the best place for close friends to share life moments.” This seems to be a direct response to Instagram which has seen many complaints in the past few years from users unable to see content from close friends and instead only seeing content recommendations. TikTok previously started rolling out another new photo-sharing app called TikTok Notes back in April, which makes the launch of “Whee” now slightly surprising. However, it’s clear to see that TikTok is definitely interested in the photo-sharing app market in one shape or form, and has Instagram’s user base in its sights 📸 Will you be downloading Whee? 💡

TikTok launches Whee, the new Instagram-like app 🔥 ByteDance's latest offering, Whee, is a fresh take on photo-sharing apps, akin to Instagram but with a more intimate focus on sharing snaps exclusively with one's nearest and dearest. At present, it's accessible on Android devices in a handful of countries, with the possibility of a global rollout on the horizon (𝑪𝑨𝑵'𝑻 𝑾𝑨𝑰𝑻!!!). Here's what we know so far: Primary Features and Accessibility: Intimate Sharing: In contrast to Instagram, Whee is crafted for sharing photos visible only to one's mates, championing a friends-only ethos. Interface: The app sports a straightforward layout with three main tabs: camera, feed and messages, along with an Instagram-like notification button. Availability: Whee can be downloaded on Android in over a dozen nations, though not yet in the UK or US. Attempts to access the app via VPN have proved fruitless (𝗜 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 😅 didn't work). Background and Comparisons Feature Adoption: The launch of Whee follows a trend of social media platforms borrowing features from each other. Instagram adopted stories and reels from Snapchat and TikTok, while TikTok introduced its Notes app, similar to Instagram's Threads. Quiet Launch: ByteDance has opt for a soft launch strategy (𝗪𝗵𝘆?? 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿! 😜). There's also a chance the app might be pulled before reaching a wider audience. 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗲 𝗮 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲? #socialmedia #bytedance

Is TikTok competing against Instagram now? 🤳 A while ago TikTok made it possible for users to upload pictures into the app, as a slideshow, or by themselves. We know that TikTok has been pushing photos among their users. Now they’ve announced something new: An entire new app, just for pictures. TikTok Notes is a new app, launched by TikTok, just for photos. Right now it looks like a mix of Pinterest and Instagram. It’s an unexpected move for a platform thats based on video content. Usually Meta is the one copying other social platforms, like how Instagram added stories and reels into their app. Now it looks like TikTok is starting to compete against Instagram. The app isn’t available in the Netherlands yet, as it’s still in its testing phase. For now it's only available in a couple of countries. We’re curious what it will do when it actually launches. Looking for apps like TikTok to develop a similar app? No worries, we’ve got you covered. TikTok is a powerhouse of an app, and it is perhaps the most entertaining and might I say controversial of all social media platforms. That is because the opinions regarding TikTok are polarizing and differ from person to person. However, Gen Z are addicted to TikTok applications and use TikTok for hours, spending a good chunk of their time scrolling through short video clips. Learn more https://lnkd.in/dADAXM-a
