🌱 General Mills & Ahold Delhaize Partner for Regenerative Agriculture! 🌱 In a powerful move towards a sustainable future, General Mills has teamed up with Ahold Delhaize USA to cut emissions and promote regenerative agriculture practices. 🌍 Together, they will invest in helping farmers adopt practices that improve soil health and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, focusing on key sourcing regions for ingredients like wheat and oats. 🌾 Farmers will receive technical and financial support to implement innovative techniques, with Ecosystem Services Market Consortium (ESMC) ensuring verified, measurable impact. By 2025, the initiative aims to cover over 70,000 acres of farmland, contributing to General Mills' larger goal of advancing regenerative agriculture on 1 million acres by 2030. This strategic collaboration reflects a joint commitment to building a healthier and more resilient food system! Joscha Reichold, Project Manager Global Sustainable Supply Chain Services, explains: “To build resilient supply chains, we go to the source, to the places where the effects of climate change are felt in everyday life. Together with our raw material partners and customers, we lay the groundwork for practical projects. From enabling social or environmental impact to targeting specific sustainability issues, our Sustainability projects and initiatives address existing challenges. In this way, we unlock potential within the supply chain and in communities.” Want to get a deeper look? Check out our project in Paraguay, which is all about regenerative agriculture. 🌿 Background: The project looks at how extreme weather affects Lemon Verbena and Lemongrass, key ingredients for many of our customers. High temperatures and drought make it difficult for farmers to grow and harvest.   🌿 Action: Together with our partners, we have developed innovative methods to enhance soil health and support family farming. These includes soil analysis, cover crops, and biostimulants to promote sustainable agriculture. Through farmer training and practical demonstrations, we help communities adapt to changing conditions, for example by planting Moringa oleifera as a shade tree. 🌿 Benefit: By helping communities adopt modern organic and regenerative farming practices, we strengthen soil resources and make farming systems more resilient to climate change. The benefits of regenerative agriculture will be felt in all countries, but the challenges to its adoption are also universal 🌍 In particular, it's a major issue that the burden of initial risks and costs associated with the transition is currently placed on the individual farmer 👨🌾 Fortunately, there are many positive developments happening. For instance, Nestlé is aiming for 20% of its key ingredients to be sourced through regenerative agriculture methods by 2025, and up to 50% in 2030 while Carlsberg Group aims to source 30% of all raw materials by 2030 from regenerative agricultural practices, and 100% by 2040. Banks are also starting to lean in to further support regenerative agriculture. However, a big challenge for banks is access to quality data and insights. Agreena's recent partnership with Raiffeisen Bank Ukraine demonstrates a way to overcome this challenge: supported by Agreena's verified farm-level data, the bank support Ukrainian farmers with finance and advice, encouraging an effective implementation of regenerative agricultural practices. Everyone stands to benefit from improved soil quality, healthier crops, increased biodiversity and enhanced food security. Accelerating this sector transition requires a collective effort from all stakeholders.
