Corporate Venture Capital is becoming a vital tool for large company innovation - but it needs encouragement from the C Suite. Investors interested in seeing their large company investees innovate more effectively should make this a key topic for senior management discussions. Global Corporate Venturing's June 2024 Symposium in London included many important, encouraging insights: “Corporate venturing units are increasingly focused on helping their portfolio companies work with business units at the parent company …” “But you do need a push from the C-suite to make this happen, investors told us in more informal talks over drinks. Without business units being given specific performance targets by the leadership to work with startups, it is hard to get the startups any meetings in the first place.” James Mawson, Maija Palmer and the team at Global Corporate Venturing’s summary of their symposium and the posted videos are a fantastic resource for anyone wanting to understand CVC's fundamental transformation of innovation investment and venture capital.

Really enjoyed shedding some light on how to bring liquidity to impact investing with Helena Wasserman, Anne Germain and Benjamin Joffe today at ChangeNOW #changenow2024. Happy to share the breathtaking view on the Eiffel tower and some of the key topics we discussed: 🔸 More #exits will require a clearer path to M&A and IPOs for both startups and VCs. 🔸 #Secondaries are a very efficient way for institutional investors to access the impact and climate private markets, > by acquiring fund stakes to "crowd" the space with new investors; - by resetting terms, including SFDR article 8 and 9 requirements, through GP Led and continuation vehicle transactions 🔸Impact investing, as it addresses pressing needs with clear market demand, might well provide the visibility required by secondary investors. Thanks again for having us ChangeNOW and looking forward to next year's edition at a fully refurbished Grand Palais! Until then, let's make the most of these amazing three days to make sure our planet remains our one and only plan A. #venturecapital #investing #impact #climate #startups #entrepreneurship

Creating ecosystems between startups, family businesses and corporates. Supporting founders to grow and succeed.
Being back from the Global Corporate Venturing Symposium last week it is no question that Corporate Venture Capital Units in Europe must foster resilience now. Amid economic challenges, of course this was one of the most discussed topics in London. GCV summarized key trends: 🤝 Focus on Partnerships: Corporates are emphasizing collaborations with portfolio companies to streamline integration and drive innovation. 📈 Big-Company Insights: CVC units provide startups with valuable guidance on scaling and operational efficiency. 🏆CVC-VC Collaborations: Increasing partnerships with VC funds enhance deal access and expand sector reach. 👷🏼♀️Venture Building: Corporates are investing in internal venture creation to foster innovation from within. 🌎 Political Risk Analysis: Heightened geopolitical tensions necessitate robust risk assessment and management strategies. I agree and would add the potential of venture Clienting, either stand alone or combined with CVC. It's still possible to build resilient CVC units to thrive and drive future growth. #CorporateVentureCapital #Resilience #Innovation #CVC #VentureClienting

Just like for #M&A, the A and B series investment requires a solid game plan. It becomes even more prevalent when considering #ESGbusinessmodels. The investor carries its personal moral values and beliefs, enhancing its intention of optimized long term risk adjusted returns in combination with positive social and environmental benefits. As global challenges such as climate change represent new or increasing risks, investors ability to positively handle those deals is central to withstand economic shocks. It all starts with a carefully crafted strategic investment plan aligned with the investor's values and vision. Consistent #foresightmethods are required at the #governance level as a strategic foundation. Looking forward to making a difference together with you Elena Rakhimova

It might sound counterintuitive and illogical, but a significant percentage of investors don't look beyond traditional tools for developing their #investmentstrategies . They often don't use #foresightmethods as a strategic foundation to mitigate long-term risks and leverage the potential of their investment portfolios. This approach may work well for early-stage #venturecapital funds, where extensive due diligence is not feasible, and diversifying small checks across numerous seed-level startups can quickly turn over investment capital. However, when we talk about true #ESGbusinessmodels it becomes more challenging to verify early-stage ventures. This is why Rahim Invest FO 🇨🇭 focuses on the A and B rounds. By this stage, businesses are quite mature but still adaptable to real #sustainable directions if their business models require adjustments. In such cases, it's essential to employ foresight methods to predict the most successful strategy and then adjust execution tactics accordingly. I'm fortunate to rely on my business partner in this very sensitive area. Additionally, we are privileged to be surrounded by the fantastic Swiss landscape, which refreshes our minds and helps us turn our brainstorming sessions into something special, bringing positive energy to our clients' offices. I am pleased to introduce you to Olivier Desjeux

2moI suppose what was being flagged is the difference between CVC units that are remote from the core business interests of the corporate and those that are almost a blue sky extension of their R&D efforts. You can see why one is easier to handle than the other. Absolutely a given that the quality of CVC due diligence can be off the scale good compared to most VC...especially on IP and ideation. Internal venturing is not new. I managed the IP Strategy for a whole clutch of internal startups over 20 years ago. Great training ground for rising stars in the corporation who nearly always have a golden parachute when things often go tits up.
