🎉 Happy Birthday, Roots Down 🎉 Six years ago today, I received a letter from the IRS with my EIN number, and Roots Down was officially in business. I didn’t know exactly what the journey would look like, but I knew what I wanted to achieve. Looking back, I’m in awe of the incredible path we’ve taken. Roots Down has been a source of inspiration and transformation for sure. Our work has made libraries in DeKalb cleaner and greener spaces for the community and your roadways more colorful with wildflowers and so much more... The impact extends beyond Roots Down—people like Miranda Rupkey and Sonia Tyler, who have worked with us, are now making a significant difference in DeKalb County, dedicating their efforts to improving the world around us. Also, to amazing partners Kim Bucciero and Tres Crow for aiding in the success and giving your blood sweat and tears over the years, A warm thank you. Through our program, countless GreenHivers and interns have learned about local solutions to climate change, sharing their wisdom and helping me grow along the way. Reflecting on all we’ve accomplished over the past six years truly makes my head spin. Like, Did you know that we now have a thriving non profit?? We do its the Fruitful Community Foundation, please check them out. With all the environmental challenges we face, staying focused can be tough—sometimes I feel like a golden retriever in a yard full of tennis balls! Someone pointed out, I’ve been beating the same drum for a long time, and that’s certainly true and I will continue to do so! Our mission Roots Down is simple: to connect our communities more deeply with nature and to become a driving force for regenerative practices. This journey is far from over, and I’m thrilled about what the next six years will bring. We have a lot of work ahead, but the progress we’ve made gives me immense hope. Thank you, Roots Down, for an incredible six years. Let’s keep making a difference together. #HappyBirthdayRootsDown #UrbanRegeneration #ClimateAction #CommunityDriven #RegenerativePractices #GreenCommunities #RootsDownJourney #EnvironmentalImpact #SustainableFuture #GreenLeadership

Sure, UN reports are cool but you know what really drives climate action? 𝗦𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀. 🍪 🌎 It's vital that social and environmental movements include everyone. Making them more accessible has been a focus of our work at Hubbub. Here's a golden rule we've learned: whether you’re hosting a community event, running a focus group, or rallying volunteers – 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗱. 🍛 Food is nourishing, inviting, and motivates people to attend or be involved in something. ↳ You know, like the big meeting that's made easier because lunch will be provided? 🍝 Mealtime activities fit into people's schedules without requiring extra time they might feel they don't have (and it keeps the kids busy!). 🍰 It makes us happy! And when we’re happy and connected to our community, we’re much more likely to take action to look after it. Food has huge cultural significance: the type of food you share sends a whole set of messages. But that's one for another post 😉. If you want to see how we engage communities in environmental action, do sign up for our newsletter or get in touch. 📮 ++ P.S. I'm CEO of environmental charity Hubbub. We create campaigns with business, government and civil society that inspire environmental action. After a year in start-up mode* as ‘PlantWorks’, Tilt Collective** goes live today! In our race to get to a sustainable and healthy food system, this is really just us arriving at the starting line, and we will launch formally later this month. We have benefitted from a huge amount of help and guidance from a group of selfless leaders in the food, climate, health and animal advocacy sectors, and partnership from a small group of intrepid philanthropies willing to engage on the push for universal access to plant-rich and healthy diets. It has been fantastic working with co-travelers Sarah Lake, Robin Willoughby and the growing Tilt Collective team, as well as working again with Ali Lucas and Steve Howard. Onwards to the starting blocks… * and several years of campaigning and development from both Steve as our Chair, and Sarah and Robin whose work at the brilliant Madre Brava we have benefited from significantly. ** What’s in a name? Our current food system is hugely over-reliant on industrial animal protein, and this serves people that grow food, and those that consume it, very poorly. And, it is driving a set of interlocking social, environmental, health and ethical crises. The system between farmers and consumers needs to tilt in their favor, and this means shifts in policies, finance, and private sector strategy to advance affordable, healthy and plant-rich diets. We are here to support the international movement of organizations and actors working for that tilt in the system. #BetterFoodSystem Ben Mowat Patricia Espinoza, DPhil (Oxon) Jenny Chu Meghan O'Brien Lowery Holly Patten Jacques-Chai Chomthongdi Collin Heng-Patton Kavita Prakash-Mani Mindy Lubber Lisa Sweet
At Tilt Collective, we’re committed to creating a sustainable, healthy global food system for all. We empower a movement of civil society, philanthropy, and the public and private sectors to grow the momentum and capacity for a global shift towards a plant-rich food system. Join our global movement! Visit our website to learn more and join our mailing list to follow our journey. #BetterFoodSystem www.tiltcollective.org

Our capacity to move forward relies on our ability to disrupt the myths that maintain unjust systems and offer a vision of something radically different. To reshape systems so that they nourish us and the #land, we must recognise our interconnectedness and reclaim our collective #power. We centre our work on the concept of reclaiming #agency. To us, this is the essence of #sovereignty — the capacity of every human being to have power and influence over the decisions and systems on which our lives depend. Reclaiming that agency begins with reclaiming control over our #narratives. Over the years, we have built our infrastructure and skillsets to support the needs of the #FoodSovereignty movement, serving as a conduit for communicating those struggles to the world. For that, our work is divided into three core programs based on the concept of social ecology: - Peasant and Indigenous Press - Agency for Food Sovereignty - History in the Making Read more about them, our 2023 highlights and what to expect from us in 2024 in our newest Substack. -- Offshoot* is a reader-supported publication. More people spending time in nature ➡️ more climate action, right? 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲. We’ve been working with coalition of partners in Manchester, to help make nature more accessible for everyone in the city and capture the stories and characteristics of community nature projects that make them thrive. Thanks to the support of the Wates Family Enterprise Trust we’ve: 🤝 Been working with communities to connect people & nature 🪴 Supported community-led initiatives to bring nature back to shared spaces 🔎 Conducted research to better understand the links between nature and climate action On that last point: it seems it's not just nature that makes a difference, but there is a mechanism for change there. It works something like this: • Enable 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: that’s what makes people turn up • Create a 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: that’s what makes people come back • Make people feel 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿: it’s what makes change feel positive and worthwhile Curious? We're doing much more on this over the coming months and years. Sign up to our business bulletin to be in the loop with the latest: hubbub.org.uk/newsletter 📩 And if you'd like to work with us to explore questions like this, you know where to find me. ☎️ ++ P.S. Ever feel like you’re juggling two worlds? For me, that's balancing engaging business and finance on a slowly transitioning pathway, and a passion for radical change, regenerative agriculture, indigenous wisdom, comune living & placemaking projects. Away from work, many friends & colleagues practice some exhilirating, often pro-bono, local community activities: 🌿 Community garden volunteering 🌿 Rewilding classes 🌿 Purchasing food from their local farmer 🌿 Singing / choir / kirtan 🌿 Regenerative agriculture on a relative's farm And yet keep them separate from their working lives. How could such anecdotal 'hobbies' relate to working towards a nature-positive economy? And yet, these local initiatives are where the magic happens – they build knowledge, foster connections, and strengthen community resilience to best tackle local nature challenges. They are run by volunteers mostly - surely you know a few in your area? However, despite massive pools of capital allocated to nature at national and supranational levels, , funding rarely trickles down to these grassroots projects – they’re seen as too small, too local, too ‘risky’, not eligible. And then Samantha Power and Leon Seefeld publish their Bioregional Financing Facilities book - and it feels like a missing piece has finally slotted into the puzzle💡🙏 Bioregions, with their unique geographical, ecological, and cultural traits, need tailored solutions and local expertise. Connecting big institutional money with these bioregions could be the game-changer we need. Check out their work here: Bioregional Financing Facilities https://www.biofi.earth/ Let's deliver resources to those with the knowledge to deploy them. 🌍 'There are now no non-radical futures' EY Gareth Jenkins #FourFutures #BioregionalBanks #IndigenousWisdom #LocalImpact #RegenerativeFinance Dark Matter Labs Louise Kjellerup Roper Kim Schwarzkopf Hamoda Youssef John Fullerton Capital Institute Amazon Sacred Headwaters Joe Brewer Tyson Yunkaporta Jessica Flore Angel Antoinette Vermilye (she/her) Felipe Villela Carrie Norton Sharon Nielson Amber Nuttall Marc Palahí Anne-Caroline Duplat Caroline Vienot
