Another convention win for Chicago! 🎉🎊 🙌  ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership is bringing its 2028 Annual Meeting to McCormick Place! The announcement came at ASAE's Annual Meeting in Cleveland this weekend where Choose Chicago had a strong contingent present. This meeting is the world's largest annual educational and networking conference for association professionals, and it is a significant win for Chicago both in terms of direct economic impact and an opportunity to influence key decision-makers and lead to more convention wins in the future. With multiple leisure and convention industry conferences coming to Chicago over the next several years, we are establishing a pipeline of future business that will drive visitation and economic impact for decades. Hi fellow democracy nerds! This post is for my young DNs in particular (where young is defined as under 40 for the purposes of this conversation). (*) Here at the Parliament of NSW we are keen to build networks that stretch far beyond our walls. And for any YDNs out there, have we got an opportunity for you! Every day I am inundated with messages from YDNs saying "Mark, you are the coolest social media poster we have ever seen. Your references are groovy, and as topical as a discotheque in a roller-skating rink. And if you're this funky, imagine how hip the young people working in the Parliament must be!" Well, gentle reader, you are 100% correct. The young professionals working at the Parliament are fully sick, stylin' and dare I say it, copasetic. And now you have a chance to engage with them at our inaugural Breakfast Club event. At the William Glasser International Conference in Chicago, I had the honor of presenting a seminar that addressed a critical issue many teams face: the hidden tensions within team cultures that hinder optimal team functioning and growth. Drawing on real-life examples and a compelling case study, I revealed how these concealed tensions can stifle progress and create internal conflict. When teams are obviously struggling, it's easier to spot the underlying reasons. However, when you're working with a team on the arc from good to great, the underlying issues are often subtle tensions in the team’s values and because they seem harmless they are harder to identify. Recognizing the implicit values guiding team dynamics and reconciling these competing values to foster a cohesive environment can be a daunting task. During my session, I introduced attendees to Causal Layer Analysis, a powerful tool for uncovering the layers of team culture and the underlying values at play. By applying Reality Therapy principles, I demonstrated practical strategies for resolving tensions within the team culture and promoting alignment. It’s never easy to be vulnerable in front of people you admire, especially on a public stage…. I was simply overwhelmed by the positive feedback from my mentors and peers. I can’t wait for our next International Conference in 2 years in Australia!

Top tip 3: Your organisation sounds amazing! When answering questions, keep the focus on how your achievements directly address the topic at hand. This helps paint a clear picture of your impact and ensures judges can fully grasp your potential.
