About us

The Parliament of New South Wales, located in Parliament House on Macquarie Street, Sydney, is the main legislative body in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW). The Parliament derives its authority from the King of Australia, His Majesty King Charles III, represented by the Governor of New South Wales, who chairs the Executive Council of New South Wales. It consists of a lower house, the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, and an upper house, the New South Wales Legislative Council. Each house is directly elected by the people of New South Wales at elections held approximately every four years.

    On 21 August, 2024, the Parliament of NSW proudly unveiled an Acknowledgement of Country sculpture in the native garden at the front of Parliament House.     Today, the Committee on Law and Safety held a regional public hearing as part of an inquiry into community safety in regional and rural communities. The Committee heard about issues such as the drivers of youth crime across regional and rural NSW, and how services for youth and families in the regions can be better matched to individuals.     Today, the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters held a second public hearing as part of its inquiry into proposals to increase voter engagement, participation and confidence. The Committee heard about options for technology assisted voting and ways to improve voter participation and confidence in electoral processes.     Should there be helmet exemptions for religious reasons in NSW? Have your say! The Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety is exploring possible exemptions from helmet requirements for the NSW public. The Committee is looking for input on how these exemptions might affect road safety, active transport and community inclusion. Submissions close on 1 November.     Should virtual stock fencing be permitted in NSW? The Committee on Investment, Industry and Regional Development has tabled its report on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment (Virtual Stock Fencing) Bill 2023. The report looks at the provisions of the bill, the benefits to the farming community and the impact on animal welfare of permitting virtual fencing.
