At TPF, we remain committed to shaping the cities of tomorrow by transforming public spaces into sustainable, resilient, and safer environments. In Belgium, the City of Antwerp, in collaboration with water supplier water-link, bus and tram operator De Lijn and the train operator NMBS-SNCB, has selected the design team BUREAU BAS SMETS, TPF ENGINEERING and Origin to redesign the Astridplein, located next to the city’s iconic central station. Our team is actively involved in every phase of the project, from preliminary design to final acceptance, including the preparation of as-built documentation. This ambitious project will transform Astridplein into a greener, climate-resilient urban space by incorporating more trees, shaded areas, rainwater collection and reuse systems. It will also enhance accessibility and infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users, renovate underground bicycle parking, and improve underground connections with the Astrid and Diamant pre-metro stations.   The contract was awarded in October 2024. The construction of the state-of-the-art Antwerp Coordination Centre (ACC), which will be the key point for managing port operations, has officially started in the Zandvliet-Berendrecht lock area. The facility is scheduled to open by the end of 2026. The eight-storey, 8,000 m², 46-metre-high building will replace the outdated centre from the 1970s.

Talinn by Train In the post-Soviet period, perhaps no project is more ambitious than Rail Baltica. Providing both civilian and freight transport between Poland and Talinn, the transport line is expected to provide billons in potential economic impact and connectivity between central Europe and the economies of the Baltic states. There have been massive upgrades underway at each of the stops but none more extensive or dramatic as the endpoint in Estonia. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, this project looks like something peeled from the pages of a futurist magazine. As is pretty standard for ZHA, parametric design connects all of the elements of the terminal but the combination of city trams, airport connectors, roadways and bicycle lanes intersect in a way that creates a sense of great activity. At some point, Rail Baltica may indeed press on to Helsinki via an underwater tube. The 13th edilon)(sedra technology forum on the topic of “Climate-neutral construction” took place on November, 7th in Nuremberg. As every year, it brought together rail construction experts from the DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) region to discuss innovative and sustainable solutions for rail transport. As we did 10 years ago, we were once again honored to co-organize the e)(s technology forum. The event began with a welcome speech by Dr.-Ing. Gerd Grütze (Managing Director edilon)(sedra) and Jens Kleeberg (CSO RAILONE), in which both once again emphasized the necessity of the interplay between ecology and economy. The first speaker, Oliver Seufert (Siemens Mobility Customer Services), presented sustainable ideas in his lecture “Sustainable Lifecycle Services”. A visionary contribution by the utopian Jan Kamensky outlined a people-friendly cityscape of the future – of course, also with green public transport. A look outside the box that encouraged guests to develop new ideas for their work areas. Insights into the different current implementations of “climate-neutral construction” within the DACH region were provided during the panel discussion, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jia Liu (TU Darmstadt) between Eva Keuschnig (Wiener Linien), Urs Feuz (Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich) and Andreas Neukrich (STESAD).) Further contributions from Ryan Stolpmann (edilon)(sedra) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andrea Kustermannn (Munich University of Applied Sciences) showed, for example, “Sustainable infrastructure rehabilitation systems for slab tracks” and “Innovative techniques for reducing CO2 in concrete”. The event concluded with a group tour of the city in a historic 1954-vintage tram – with gingerbread, mulled wine and pretzels. This ‘tale of two cities’ is about forward-thinking, human-centered design in creating smart cities that truly serve citizens, highlighting the potential for transformation when we embrace smart, sustainable solutions. Infrastructure Follies vs. Smart Solutions: A Tale of Two Cities For years now we've been 'commuting' between Europe & London, often under the sea via an excellent train. The joke was about having to set the clocks back to 1943 when making this trip. While London grapples with third world infrastructure and bureaucratic gridlock, many cities have since adopted next-level approaches to growth. The contrast highlights innovative, human-centered design for creating connected, smart, healthy and dare we say, happy spaces. The Hammersmith Bridge debacle epitomises London's struggle with jurassic infrastructure & arrested development: - Built by the Victorians in 1824-1827 (apprx 3 years to build) - Closed to road traffic since March 2017 (apprx. 6.5 years as of October 2024) - Repair process taking much longer than original construction - Symbolises broader issues of neglect and dated infrastructure - Causing significant stress and dis-ease This situation highlights a misguided governance approach, allowing critical infrastructure to deteriorate into crisis. Core issues; bureaucracy, infighting between councils/ boroughs/ the MOD, + a chronic lack of skills/ funding. In 2017, whilst living in London, I was invited as a guest speaker and panelist at the Big Data/ Smart Cities event at the RAI in AMS. The innovations ranged from designing smart cities to the use of Big Data, IoT, and advanced planning. Some of these have now been implemented. A Smart City Use Case: Award-winning Albert Cuypgarage and De Pijp metro station AC garage: - 600 underwater parking spaces, preserving surface area - Built beneath an active canal - Smart Iot tech - Frees above-ground space for pedestrians, cyclists, and green areas De Pijp Metro: - Capacity for 18k passengers/ day - Deepest station in AMS (26.5m underground) - Construction took 7 yrs (2010-2017) - Innovative "stacked" platform design due to space constraints Since 2009, Amsterdam pioneered smart growth through the flow cities approach, creating ecosystems where people, resources, and ideas move seamlessly. Key Points: - Smart City platform launch in 2009 for cross-sector collabs - Progression towards smart city powerhouse - Methodical approach to sustainable growth - Ecosystem for innovation Smart city principles: - Vision: Long range plan for future needs - Multidimensional thinking - IoT/ adv. analytics integration - Human-Centered: Prioritising quality of life - Sustainable: Balancing development beyond 'do no harm' Innovation isn't just about big tech – it's about 'seeing with new eyes' and 'zigging when all others zag'.
