I have come across a report from National Gas stating that it's possible to use methane gas pipelines for transport of 100 % hydrogen. This result stands in contrast to all other studies I know of. Of course there is the obvious possibility of biased results based on economic interests, but could the conclusion be true? Paul Martin, what is your opinion on the report? https://lnkd.in/d-wyU23B

You know you love your job when you find yourself deep in the gas archives of a Sunday evening. But forgive me… that is some great footage of our pipes 🤩 Bacton Gas Terminal - where we hosted the Prime Minister last year - was critical in our national conversion to natural gas. The situation has not changed: ✅ huge promise for the future 🏭 demands of the modern world 📈 a marked transformation That ‘marked transformation’ for us means that our sites, including Bacton, will one day be converted to hydrogen, alongside technologies including CCS. 💷 And the balance of payment saving reaching £100m a year in 1969? Well, imagine what we could achieve with hydrogen today. Often we need to look back to be inspired for the future, and I’m confident we can build on our successes as an industry to deliver for the country in the future. "Imagine what we could achieve with hydrogen today" Imagination is needed because the reality is that there is no reality here. If that even makes sense?🤔 There are no calculations showing what we could achieve today. "Why not?" you might ask! When scientists or engineers rightly ask for figures they are told that their questions are "bonkers". Always assuming that these knowledgeable people haven't already been blocked by the fossil fuel industry hydrogen advocates. Hydrogen is the last roll of the dice for legacy gas distribution / transmission businesses. We're constantly told we need gas transmission and distribution pipelines. In Sweden there are 600 km of gas transmission pipelines and 2600 km of gas distribution pipelines. In the UK we have 7,700 km of transmission pipelines and 275,000 km of gas distribution pipelines. We have 88x as much pipeline length serving a country less than half the size of Sweden. Albeit the UK is 6.5x as populated. Norway, one of the world’s largest gas producers, barely uses any methane gas at all. Most of what it does use is for refining crude petroleum and for natural gas extraction. Offshore in each case. The idea that we need to have a gas transmission network or gas distribution network "because we have a [world class / amazing / whatever superlative] network already" is phoney. We need to think about things afresh. Given the efficiency of using hydrogen other than as a feedstock serious questions need to be asked. Think of Norway like a sweet shop. It sells its sweets rather than eating them all. And is a very rich country. When we found gas in the North Sea we "ate" it ourselves. And now, like people who eat too many sweets, we need to wean ourselves off our dependence on the stuff!

A growing addiction to unaffordable and imported LNG, doesn’t constitute progress towards decarbonization of our energy system. There are two fundamental issues with LNG. First issue, LNG is the cleanest burning fossil fuel only because companies fail to track methane leakage from well to, pipeline, liquefaction, transport and regasification. Over 100 years, a ton of methane released will trap about 28 times as much heat as a ton of CO2. Second issue, expensive LNG is killing European competitiveness in manufacturing, with many companies moving to the U.S, to benefit from low energy prices and IRA.
