"I receive more and more calls each year from landowners inquiring about their seedlings having a “funny” look or appearing to look like “little bushes.” Inevitably, after investigating the claims, I find that one of two culprits is at work. I have already discussed one of the primary villains, the Nantucket Pine Tip Moth, in a TreeLines article a while back. Now let’s talk about the other one. DEER! Officially Whitetail Deer." Did you know wolves can help threatened loggerhead sea turtles? How? With their urine! Coyotes are the main threat to loggerhead sea turtle eggs on South Carolina beaches and are responsible for 85-90% of egg losses. A 2021 study trialed using wolf urine dispensers at nesting sites to deter coyote presence, and it worked! The application of wolf urine signaled to the coyotes that wolves, historical adversaries of coyotes, were present, and this resulted in a 76% reduction in nest depredations. Bats need stable conditions at their roost sites. If temperature fluctuates too widely, it is more difficult for the bats to get comfortable. Despite this, this book from 1962 shows Greater Horseshoe bats in a roof without any lining. This must have been breezy as air blows through the tiles. In spite of this, the bats in the picture are clearly happy. How do we explain is? When bats cluster together they share body warmth. Perhaps in 1962 there were enough bats to keep warm, despite their choice of roost? Any other suggestions? #ecologylife #batsurveys #wildlife
