In a new paper, we examine the risks of large-scale #landdeals for communal land in the Global South. Check out the maps of potential overlap of land deals with communal land, for example in the #drcongo and #cambodia. Insufficient formal recognition of communal #landrights remains a key challenge. #ilc #landmatrix https://lnkd.in/dnU9eZCf Thanks go to the #bmz for funding our research.

https://lnkd.in/gtHBn2cU Some land in the Sahtu region is now zoned special management that was once zoned for a proposed conservation initiative. Development in this area will be subject to the same conditions as general use zones and CR #20 – South Nahanni Watershed All applications for land use proposed in SMZ Zone 41 – South Nahanni Watershed must demonstrate: a) How impacts to mountain woodland caribou, grizzly bears, Dall’s sheep, moose, and mountain goats, their habitat and migration patterns, and important community harvesting areas will be avoided or mitigated; b) How audio or visual impacts on users of the Little Nahanni River will be avoided or mitigated; and, c) That the activity does not substantially alter quality, quantity, or rate of flow for waters within the South Nahanni Watershed.

Recognized International Leader and Speaker on Race, Gender and Ethnic Diversity and Inclusion and Implicit Bias
Professor Leshy asserts "Especially in recent years, Native entities who have maintained strong cultural ties to places on public lands have sought greater consideration of these connections. This movement may be grouped into three somewhat overlapping categories. The first encompasses campaigns calling for the U.S. government to strengthen protections for particular public lands. This can be done by Congress, through legislation to establish protected areas like national parks, or by executive action, as when presidents use authority Congress provided in the Antiquities Act of 1906 to establish national monuments. The second category is where Native entities seek to become directly involved in the U.S. government's administration of these lands--often called “co- stewardship” or “co-management.” The third category is where Native entities seek to obtain a legal ownership interest in particular public lands--often called “land back.” Each of these is explored in more detail below."

Join us for the complimentary webinar, “Assessing Wetlands and Protection Challenges in BC,” as our Environmental Science (ENS) experts discuss wetland stewardship on September 19th. Our Senior Project Biologist, Carolyn Prentice, and Operations Manager, Brennan Anstey, will provide an overview of what a wetland is, why it is valuable, what the common assessment techniques are, how they are regulated, and why they are often overlooked and missed. Wetlands are almost everywhere and come in different forms. They are often viewed as interfering with preferred land uses and are filled to put the land to "better" use. Defining wetlands and identifying if they are present relies on scientific and regulatory approaches. We will describe wetland indicators that are used to make that determination and relate this to wetland functions and the value they have in the watershed for preserving healthy ecosystems. Land development planning stretches retaining wetlands because of pressure for increased housing, infrastructure, and growth management. Wetland stewardship has various challenges, and we will discuss what this means for competing interests and prioritizing land management options.
