At Quest Defense, we stand strong in our appreciation for the armed forces. We believe that there are many things you can learn as a military officer that translate perfectly into the civilian world. In this piece, Brig. Gen. David Elwell talks about his experience in the Army and how it has positively impacted his personal and professional life. Elwell says that some of the most important skills he learned in the Army are communication and collaboration. “The leader has to know how to communicate the mission and then merge the team together... If your team does not gel, or if you don’t have the right people in the right seats, you have to address it immediately." I have to agree with him; in the military and business, the leader has to be an effective communicator. THE LEADER TRUSTS FIRST Maj. Gen. Cameron Holt (ret., USAF), the immediate past the past Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US Air Force, has spent over three decades leading in the US military, instituting major changes and leaving a lasting impact. So, when he speaks, people learn. His most profound lesson? Trust is earned, not given. According to Holt, loyalty to your employer is owed, but trust must be earned through behavior. And who should initiate this trust? The leader. The leader should trust first. The results of Holt's philosophy were evident at a USAF conference where I had the privilege to give a keynote speech. Many hundreds of officers were attending. I talked to many of them. To the last man and woman, they would go through fire for him. Remember, trust is not something that can be demanded or commanded. It must be earned. As a leader, you need to take the first step in building trust with your team by expressing trust in them through word and action. Give them challenging tasks and don't micromanage how they accomplish it. Be there for advice and support. Excellent introduction to the SCC aspect of H2F. A key component is injury prevention through appropriate and consistent PT. As this program expands ultilization, it's impact will be felt down the road as injuries go down and more adaptable soldiers are developed. Combined with the other resources within H2F, the program will strengthen and improve the quality of life for service members. #H2F
