Thanks to the RTA for hosting this event. I was struck by the depth of the partnerships described by the speakers. Working at the region's MPO, I have seen the difference that partnerships across government agencies have made in our region. The speakers gave many examples of what we should strive for. Many great leaders of transit were in the room. My table discussed two topics that have me thinking still. 1. What should we ask of our transportation agencies? Some people said they should focus on running buses and trains or maintaining pavement. Others wanted them to reach beyond and become real estate developers. How would a safe and inviting station change a community and who is responsible for making that happen? The most dangerous part of riding transit is often getting to and from the stop. If the agency that "owns" the road spends most of their time thinking about pavement and congestion- how do we prioritize/ align with the goals of transit users? What does it mean to put a bus stop in a location where it is not safe to cross the street? 2. The role of transit operators and attendants is changing, but are we adjusting fast enough? What does it mean for Metra to eliminate station attendants? Should CTA attendants still sit in fortified cubes when they no longer collect money? LA’s system only has attendants at half of their stations. How does the job of operators, attendants, and security change when we have 100x cameras and AI can detect weapons or medical emergencies? How does an aging population impact our needs – such as for public restrooms? What is the difference between a bus driver and a bus operator? The RTA event was a good discussion starter, but we need to keep having this conversation. Molly Poppe Audrey Wennink Roberto Requejo Michael Horsting, AICP
Everyone deserves to feel safe on transit. I’m grateful to all the partners who came together to share safety goals and solutions at the Regional Transportation Authority of Northeastern Illinois (RTA)’s Public Transit Safety and Security Summit. We heard from RTA Executive Director Leanne Redden and State Senator Ram Villivalam, among others. Pivot Strategies’ Flora Castillo moderated a panel on peer best practices, featuring Lesley Kandaras of Metro Transit and Stephen Tu of Los Angeles Metro.

The San Pedro Bay port complex plays a pivotal role in shaping Southern California's industrial real estate landscape. Its proximity influences the base rents, demand, and development of industrial spaces, partly due to reduced drayage rates and simplified logistics. The port complex's key metrics not only highlight the region's economic health but also provide a snapshot of the U.S. economy. Key Facts: ♦ In 2023, the port reported a total cargo value of over $492 billion. ♦ Major imports comprised of furniture, machine parts, auto parts, apparel, and electronics. ♦ East and Southeast Asian countries make up the top trading partners, with China as the largest contributor to the San Pedro Bay’s imported TEUs. ♦ Throughout 2023, 29% of all U.S. imported and exported goods over water came through the port complex, providing more than 2.7 million jobs throughout the nation.

🚍 Chief Manufacturing Officer Paul S. Lavoie and the team at CBIA set out on this bus tour of Connecticut to show the immense value (and cool factor) of manufacturing everything from submarines and jet engines to PEZ candy right here in the Nutmeg State. It’s essential that residents, businesses, and policymakers understand what manufacturing offers Connecticut. Not only does it drive 13% of CT's GDP, but it also provides good-paying, rewarding careers—careers that help keep innovation and craftsmanship thriving. That's a strong mark of who we are and will continue to be as a state. As we look to the future, it’s equally important to inspire a new generation of workers to explore these exciting opportunities. Manufacturing is evolving with cutting-edge technology and offering career paths. Together, we can ensure Connecticut remains a leader in making some of the world’s most important and iconic products. #MakeItHere #Connnecticut #Manufacturing #Candy #Aersopace #Submarine #Business #Jobs #WorkforceDevelopment | Connecticut Office of Manufacturing
