The Round Table on Responsible Soy’s guiding principles account for Legal Compliance and Good Business Practices, Responsible Labour Conditions, Responsible Community Relations, Environmental Responsibility and Good Agricultural Practices. These principles are a holistic approach to sustainable soy production including, and beyond, deforestation-free production. At the RTRS Meeting Point, Juan Carlos Cotella from Aapresid (Argentine No Till Farmers Association), Marco Nogueira from Embrapa, Marcella Giudice from Unilever, and Jonadan Ma will focus-in on all of the factors and principles that must be considered as a part of sustainable soy production. This week, Yvonne Cooney, Sustainability & Responsibility Manager at Irish Distillers attended Teagasc’s annual General Assembly which shared insights and progress from the Signpost Farms initiative. We’re proud to be a partner of this initiative, alongside other brewing and distilling companies, co-operatives and research bodies, who are committed to supporting grain growing best practice in Ireland.  Here’s why it matters: 🌍 The programme aims to reduce emissions, improve water quality, boost biodiversity, and make farming more sustainable and profitable. It sets out to support farmers in implementing best practice now in order to scale-up best practice over the coming years. 🌿 Teagasc Signpost farmers have already made good progress, increasing cover crop planting from 17% in 2022 to 25% in 2023, reducing the need for fertilizers and resulting in an overall decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. 🌳 Tillage farmers are collaborating and leading the way in promoting biodiversity, maintaining hedgerows and native bird species on-farm. 🔍 Although Irish agriculture emissions decreased by 1.2% in 2022, more work is needed to meet carbon reduction targets. Teagasc's goal is to significantly scale up Signpost farming practices by 2030. 🤝 Irish Distillers is committed to supporting farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture, with initiatives like our Sustainable Green Spring Barley Scheme and the regenerative agriculture project in collaboration with Boortmalt, Heineken and Earthworm Foundation. ✨ Fazer's Grain vision – Towards a Sustainable Future Together! 🌾🌍 In 2013, we took a significant step towards sustainable farming with the launch of Grain vision. This unique cultivation program is based on ten principles of sustainable agriculture, developed in close collaboration with farmers, producer organizations, and environmental NGOs. Many farmers who work with Fazer have adopted the principles of Grain vision for their farms in Finland and Sweden. These ten principles are like a condensed guide of the best ways to protect waterways and biodiversity and increase carbon sequestration into the soil. At the same time, we're working to use less pesticides when growing crops. ✅ 🌱 Our goal is to encourage farmers to adopt the principles of sustainable agriculture as a minimum standard in their cultivation practices. We're happy to announce the launch of the 11th edition of the English Agrospecial e-magazine ‘Impact of EU Deforestation Regulation worldwide’ written by the Netherlands Agricultural Network (LAN). 🌳 The regulation is meant to promote deforestation-free products reducing the EU’s impact on global deforestation and forest degradation. It affects seven commodities (cocoa, coffee, soy, oil palm, wood, rubber, and cattle) and their derivatives, as well as products made using these commodities such as chocolate, palm oil and leather. Soil is not just dirt; it's a living, breathing ecosystem teeming with life. From microscopic bacteria to earthworms, a diverse community of organisms works together to create a thriving environment for plants to grow. Healthy soil is the foundation of sustainable agriculture, providing us with the food we eat. World Soil Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of soil in the agricultural sector. Looking at the SIZA Environmental Standard, a soil management plan must be implemented to ensure the sustainable use and conservation of agricultural soil. The goal of the management plan is to assist South African growers with an approach to measuring and reporting against sustainability criteria, specifically those that are relevant to on-farm activities within the South African context. The SIZA Environmental Standard has been developed for fresh produce industries and is focused on addressing environmental risks at the farm level (on the land) and post-production level (packhouses). In addition, 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐫 is also obtained from the 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞, which further contributes to environmental sustainability. Exciting News from Brazil! Transforming agriculture to produce enough food while restoring the environment has often seemed like an ambitious dream, but let me assure you, tangible results are here today. #RegenerativeAgriculture is more than just a concept; it's a movement led by passionate individuals across various sectors. The #TeamBayer colleagues in Brazil are actively paving the way for agriculture that does both: feeding the plant and protecting the planet’s resources. 🚀 They've achieved a milestone – the very first shipment of deforestation-free soybeans, cultivated with a traceable and measurable carbon footprint, has left the dock. Soybeans, a critical global commodity, have often been linked to deforestation and environmental degradation. But not this time. Through Bayer's visionary #PROCarbono program in collaboration with Embrapa, farmers are championing a new way forward. They're not only recognized for their yields, but more crucially, for their commitment to regenerative practices.
