Washington University in St. Louis developed the Translational Science Benefits Model, which identifies 30 benefits of clinical and translational research in four domains, including: clinical, community, economic and policy. The Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative of Northern Ohio‘s Research Equity, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion (READI) program focuses on the impact of research on policy in its READI Research Policy Impact series. Policies are defined as procedural rules formally adopted and mandated by governmental agencies or private or nonprofit organizations. There are big “P” policies (i.e., governmental) and little “P” policies (i.e., non-government organization). Examples of little “P” policies include hospital policies. Members of the community can explore this topic during the first 2024 webinar of the READI Research Policy Impact series. Excited to share that University of Michigan researchers from #UMPrecisionHealth and Max Harry Weil Institute for Critical Care Research and Innovation were awarded a $500,000, two-year grant through the American Heart Association for a project focused on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Read more on the project's potential impacts: https://lnkd.in/g8N-NqdK This project centers around predicting the presence of HCM in patients who were previously undiagnosed from common tests available in the EHR like Electro and echocardiograms. HCM is a serious heart condition where heart muscle becomes thickened, most often due to genetic abnormalities, leading to poor cardiac function & rhythm abnormalities. Project lead is Sardar Ansari, PhD, Research Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine. Co-investigators include Precision Health Co-Director Brahmajee Nallamothu, MD, Adam Helms, MD, & John Donnelly, MSPH, PhD, all of University of Michigan Medical School. Gretchen Carpenter is a member of the Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations Society for Medical Humanities (DHF) and was selected for the Eichler Fellowship for Healthcare Leaders 2022-23. Since graduating from Dartmouth College, she has been busy but thoughtful in incorporating the skills she picked up from participating in DHF professional development opportunities into her continued education and work. "I graduated from Dartmouth with my BA in June 2023, where I studied biomedical engineering and global health. I returned to Hanover in the fall to finish my BE in biomedical engineering and a Master of Science also in biomedical engineering with a focus on medical physics. For my BE culminating project, I am working with a team of urologists, and in the lab, I do on radiation oncology and am working on a project that aims to help improve the accuracy of pre-clinical research. Upon completion of my master's thesis, I plan to attend Geisel Medical School. I continue to carry with me the principles and ideas discussed during our meetings. For example, I became increasingly interested in how good health is often defined as the absence of abnormalities instead of the presence of well-being, a mindset I believe can accidentally perpetuate a culture of mistreatment. As an engineering student, when we are tasked with implementing innovation to provide the best possible solution to medical ailments, it can be easy to get bogged down in the numbers, calculations, and prototypes. My DHF lens has helped me consistently consider the broader picture of who the product we develop helps treat. While working with urologists, I have discussed the evolution of PSAs, and why their age screening requirements are the way they are. At the same time, I have also grown to see how radiology has the huge advantage of providing evidence-based decision-making in healthcare.
