Every person in Michigan needs access to safe, secure, and stable housing. In order to improve access, Michigan needs to pass legislation that protects prospective renters by enacting legislation statewide that would protect them from being denied housing based on their: • Source of Income • Prior arrests or conviction • Credit score • Prior eviction due to fleeing domestic violence Additionally, Michigan should develop a system to provide for a tenants right to counsel, and enact legislation enshrining a tenant’s bill of rights and a homeless bill of rights. I think in the anti slavery sector we really need to be mindful that each survivor of trafficking has a distinct story to tell, shaped by their unique experiences and circumstances. It's crucial to acknowledge that no single survivor can fully encapsulate the diverse range of experiences within the survivor community. By recognising the individuality of each survivor, it honours their resilience, strength, and the complexities of their journey towards healing and recovery. Listening to a variety of survivor voices can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the issue of trafficking and ensure that support and advocacy efforts are inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of survivors. One voice is never everyone’s voice.

In Trauma & Recovery, Judith Herman describes the 3 stages of recovery as “establishing safety, reconstructing the trauma story, and restoring the connection between survivors and their community.” Domestic violence advocacy work is woven into all 3 stages. An example: - shelters & planning for safety - talking through the power & control wheel to deconstruct the abuse patterns - support groups where safe community begins to re-establish Every survivor deserves an advocate.

This #SuicidePreventionWeek, we're sharing some of the critical work funded by APF to understand, prevent, and reduce suicide and offer care for people and communities who need it most. Today, we are highlighting Dr. Shabnam Javdani’s impactful project. This research examines how Black girls' experiences of school pushout may increase their risk for suicide and self-harm, while also evaluating how the ROSES community-based advocacy program can mitigate these harms. 💛💙

Attend educational events and workshops to deepen your understanding of the issues and discover ways to support survivors. By uniting and advocating for change, we can build a safer, more compassionate world for all.
