Dad, are you pouring into your kids daily? Are you intentional with your actions and answer every bid for your attention? That’s your duty as a dad. Being a father is not a spectator sport. But…You might have to make the first move. Yesterday was an example of that for me as the leader of my family. I wanted to go on a hike together. I brought it up and the family followed. You’ll hear many people telling you to wait until their teenagers. I say BS. When you pour into your kids they will want to spend time with you. My boys are 15 and 13 but yet we still go on walk and hikes. We still play board games together. We spent a ton of time together this break and it was awesome. Moments I will always remember. Success is born in the darkness. The hard work, the sweat, the effort happens while no one is watching. My oldest son Jackson asked me to work him out, to get some speed and agility work in. We went to a local high school. It was early on a Saturday morning.He went to work. Many of his peers are sleeping in. That’s the competitive advantage I made sure he knows about. That’s the gift I can give him as I guide him as his dad. I can teach him about grit, about resilience, about how effort counts twice. These things aren’t taught in a classroom setting. Here’s the number one reason I feel why dads get stuck in a rut. They don’t have a system. We live with a vast amount of information at our fingertips but… Many dads just don’t know where to start. 10 days away from one of the biggest challenges of my life. A 50k trail ultra marathon in the mountains of PA. I’ve never ran that far in my life. It’s out of my comfort zone for sure. Plus I really don’t like to run. But with everything in life, we can learn lessons in what we do. One of the powerful lessons learned in my journey training for the race is the power of commitment. When you commit everything changes. Your discipline and training is raised because you have a target. You prioritize recovery and sleep. You strategize on the best ways to train for the hills and elevation. Commitment is the key. Commitment changes the game. That’s the lesson I want to share with the dads in my network today.
