As a dad, one of my daily priorities is creating micro moments with my family. I intentionally keep this top of mind each day. We get limited time with our kids under our roof. By age 12, 75% of our time with our kids is gone. By age 18, 95% of the time we get with our kids will be gone. It could be a small thing like an extra long hug and love you. It could be a great laugh we have over something that’s just plain stupid. It could be talking about a memory from the past. Or it could be a big thing like taking the family to their first game at Madison Square Garden (A Sixers win by the way). The amazing thing about the trip up to NYC yesterday is there are multiple micro moments hidden in the larger moment. I can count a dozen from the trip off the top of my head. Those experiences are what our kids will remember. That’s what we will remember as dads. That’s where our power lies. Those micro moments will fill you up and energize you to be better for your kids. Dad, are you pouring into your kids daily? Are you intentional with your actions and answer every bid for your attention? That’s your duty as a dad. Being a father is not a spectator sport. My boys are 15 and 13 but yet we still go on walk and hikes. We still play board games together. We spent a ton of time together this break and it was awesome. Moments I will always remember. Success is born in the darkness. The hard work, the sweat, the effort happens while no one is watching. My oldest son Jackson asked me to work him out, to get some speed and agility work in. We went to a local high school. It was early on a Saturday morning.He went to work. Many of his peers are sleeping in. That’s the competitive advantage I made sure he knows about. That’s the gift I can give him as I guide him as his dad. I can teach him about grit, about resilience, about how effort counts twice. These things aren’t taught in a classroom setting. They’re taught by doing the hard work. They’re taught by doing the work even when you don’t feel like it. It’s part of what I’m instilling in their DNA as my sons. It’s part of our family creed. Here’s the number one reason I feel why dads get stuck in a rut. They don’t have a system. We live with a vast amount of information at our fingertips but… Many dads just don’t know where to start. They don’t know what that first action should be. What ends up happening? They do nothing. The problem with doing nothing is you’re actually getting worse. There is no staying the same in life. You’re either stepping forward into growth. Or losing ground back into safety and comfort. Worse yet, as a dad, your kids are watching your lack of action. They will repeat what you’re doing. They will pause, hesitate and procrastinate. The key is to take action and figure out the system. Or go to someone with a battle tested system to get you the success that you crave.
