I was asked recently by a dad, “Where do I start?” I hear this quite often. We have access to more information now than we ever have had in human history. So much so that it can be very overwhelming. The answer is simple and easy. The answer is in the relationship with ourselves. What does that mean? It means when you make a commitment, follow through with it. When you do that you build internal trust. The trust that when you say you’ll do something, you actually do it. What does that internal trust muscle you’re building lead to? It leads to confidence. It also leads to training your mind to help you rather than stop you. It leads to a smile in the mirror when you look at yourself instead of disappointment. That’s where you start. As a dad, one of my daily priorities is creating micro moments with my family. I intentionally keep this top of mind each day. We get limited time with our kids under our roof. By age 12, 75% of our time with our kids is gone. By age 18, 95% of the time we get with our kids will be gone. It could be a small thing like an extra long hug and love you. It could be a great laugh we have over something that’s just plain stupid. It could be talking about a memory from the past. Or it could be a big thing like taking the family to their first game at Madison Square Garden (A Sixers win by the way). The amazing thing about the trip up to NYC yesterday is there are multiple micro moments hidden in the larger moment. I can count a dozen from the trip off the top of my head. Those experiences are what our kids will remember. That’s what we will remember as dads. That’s where our power lies. Those micro moments will fill you up and energize you to be better for your kids. Success is born in the darkness. The hard work, the sweat, the effort happens while no one is watching. My oldest son Jackson asked me to work him out, to get some speed and agility work in. We went to a local high school. It was early on a Saturday morning.He went to work. Many of his peers are sleeping in. That’s the competitive advantage I made sure he knows about. That’s the gift I can give him as I guide him as his dad. I can teach him about grit, about resilience, about how effort counts twice. These things aren’t taught in a classroom setting. They’re taught by doing the hard work. They’re taught by doing the work even when you don’t feel like it. It’s part of what I’m instilling in their DNA as my sons. It’s part of our family creed. When your son or daughter is having difficulty figuring something out, it’s important to offer support and encouragement. You can: Stay patient and calm: Keep a reassuring and patient demeanor to reduce their anxiety. Ask open-ended questions: Encourage them to think and problem-solve by asking questions like, “What have you tried so far?” or “Can you tell me what’s confusing you?” Offer guidance, not solutions: Instead of giving them the answer, provide hints or suggestions to guide them in the right direction. Break it down: Help them break the problem into smaller, manageable steps to make it less overwhelming. Praise effort, not just results: Acknowledge their hard work and perseverance, regardless of the outcome. Be available: Let them know you’re there to help and support them whenever they need it. Teach resilience: Use these moments as opportunities to teach resilience and the value of learning from mistakes. Remember, the goal is to help them build problem-solving skills and self-confidence. Here’s the number one reason I feel why dads get stuck in a rut. They don’t have a system. We live with a vast amount of information at our fingertips but… Many dads just don’t know where to start. They don’t know what that first action should be. What ends up happening? They do nothing. The problem with doing nothing is you’re actually getting worse. There is no staying the same in life. Dads, this a powerful statement to remember… Often times, we want to see the outcome or see the whole staircase. That desire, that need, causes us not to move, to not take that first step. That’s why we stay stuck. That’s why we stay in the same place in life. That habit your children are inheriting whether you like it or not. I like to frame it up as the next telephone pole strategy when I’m out for a long run. Many times, my legs are burning. My lungs are spent. I have trouble seeing myself finishing. When ever those thoughts creep in and we all have them… I think about that next telephone pole. Just make it to that next one. What happens is the mind then sees that it’s possible. It helps me instead of stop me with uncertainty of the whole staircase. In anything in life, break it down to the next telephone pole, the next step.
