We're not going to meet our climate targets without addressing existing buildings. That's why the AIA's new Guide to Building Reuse for Climate Action is so important. Existing buildings can (and should) be renovated to achieve exceptional performance, while also preserving the embodied carbon (and cultural heritage) they represent. I'm particularly proud that Sol design + consulting's Myers-Heckman Residence is featured as a case study in the Guide. This deep energy retrofit and addition to a building in Cincinnati's historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood shows what can be done even within the constraints of a historic district. https://lnkd.in/gxanQAGC

What is the Building Blocks manifesto? It is UK Architects Declare’s manifesto for a climate-literate future. The document is a win-win as it not only claims to transform the built environment in response to the threat of climate catastrophe but also predicts a boost in low-carbon sector jobs, the general economy, and savings to the NHS through retrofitting cold homes. Sounds perfect right? Just one crucial caveat: the government needs to take action. Reeducate the entire population with transformed skills, different mindsets, and priorities. This has resulted in a massive decline of approximately 70% in the global population of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians over the past 50 years. As the Earth’s life support systems are increasingly threatened, the construction industry contributes significantly, responsible for over 40% of global CO2 emissions. 🏗️ Key Considerations for Architects and Builders: 🌬 Air Tightness: Implementing highly efficient air barrier systems can drastically cut heating and cooling energy needs, reducing CO2 emissions. ⏺ Zero Emission Materials: Selecting materials and Designing buildings with sustainability in mind that have minimal environmental impact can make a substantial difference in the carbon footprint of construction projects. 🏙 Efficient urban planning like Green Infrastructure, Incorporating green roofs, facades, and public spaces can enhance urban biodiversity and contribute to climate regulation.
