On behalf of clients IKB PROPERTIES LLC and Marick, our designs for a major mixed-use project next to Temple Meads Station, Bristol, have been granted planning. The urban block, one of the last pieces in the jigsaw of Bristol’s Temple Quarter masterplan, brings together a hotel and an aparthotel alongside a Build to Rent (BTR) development. Commenting on the news, Sheppard Robson partner, Dan Burr, said: “The project will provide much-needed housing, hospitality and retail spaces to enliven and enrich an area which is currently dominated by office buildings. “For this pivotal plot, we needed to strike a balance between respecting the neighbouring pieces of the city, and its industrial heritage, whilst also setting the tone for a new generation of modern buildings that will be delivered in the years to come.” Visualisations by Viktoriia Aloshyna + Oleksandr Levytskyi #hoteldesign #buildtorent #bristolarchitecture

Architecture and Planning
We are a collective of architects, interior designers and masterplanners.
About us
Sheppard Robson is an ever-evolving collective of architects, interior designers and masterplanners. Together our team of 370 people design buildings, spaces and places that are people-centred and precision-made. Our family includes our interior design specialists ID:SR and AXIS, which applies our detailed design expertise to major projects by others. From our offices in London, Manchester and Glasgow, we work on a scale, and with a legacy of expertise, that means we can engage with society’s most pressing challenges. The most urgent of these is the need to achieve a better balance between humans and nature on our planet of limited resources. With no single solution, the mitigation of climate change can only be achieved with the critical application of an inventive, multi-layered approach, and by fundamentally rethinking how we live, learn, work and play. Our work is the result of creative, technical and intellectual exchange. People-centred design comes out of an engagement process where architects enable, listen and interpret as well as lead. With a robust methodology for testing ideas, we are able to fine-tune them without losing their pioneering spirit. Every project we make presents the opportunity to push our learning a little further, but we never forget that innovation should always be in the service of a clear purpose – to design for life.

Our retrofit of 60 Queen Victoria Street in the City of London has gained planning. The careful repositioning of the landmark City office retains the architectural spirit of the original building while bringing the development up to modern standards, boosting the project's wellness and sustainability credentials. The design minimises changes to the exterior architectural language of the 1997-99 Peter Foggo-designed office building while substantially improving environmental performance. The reworking of the interior–which includes the creation of an enlarged hospitality-led reception, dedicated cycle entrance at ground floor, and the addition of the rooftop pavilion– creates flexible floorplates and enhance the amenity offering. We’re delighted to share that 68-86 Farringdon Road has been shortlisted in the Mixed Use category for the New London Awards 2024! The 9,690m2 mixed-use development is formed of a 180-key hotel for Whitbread’s hub by Premier Inn brand that neighbours speculative office building, owned by CLI Dartriver’s. With a carefully choreographed series of connections and differences, the two buildings come together to redefine the linear urban block into distinct legible forms that scale to the neighbourhood. Retail spaces, the hotel's café and the office’s reception at ground-floor level animate the streetscape of this bustling London thoroughfare, while generous glazing brings a sense of the busy streets inside. The scheme's relationship to its surrounding context was a crucial element of the design development, and community engagement was baked into the design from the initial conception. The final design demonstrates a holistic focus on the wellbeing of not only its users but the community surrounding it, and features a number of changes including a greener, more accessible play areas for local residents, as a result of their input. Great to see the Architects’ Journal featuring our designs for the retrofit of Calton Square, a landmark office building in Edinburgh’s city centre. Our proposal, for development manager Ardstone Capital, aims to “reposition the existing building by creating an exemplary adaptive reuse project that excels in environmental performance and becomes an asset to the community” – Mark Kowal, SR Partner. The focus on sustainability and wellness is apparent on arrival with an extended main entrance and a new reception with co-working, lounge and café spaces. This leads through to the heart of the project – a triple-height atrium covered by a new structural timber roof to repurpose the internal, previously underutilised courtyard. Delighted to share our designs for the radical retrofit of Calton Square, a landmark office building in Edinburgh’s city centre. Retaining 88% of the existing structural frame, the major refurbishment seeks to create a new identity for the building, through reconfiguration and enhancements, that exemplifies sustainable and wellness-centred design. Designed for Ardstone Capital acting on behalf of Macquarie Asset Management, our proposal extends the building from 150,000sqft to 200,000sqft with a series of design changes which will align the building to the demands of the modern occupier and provide a significant uplift in the environmental performance of the building. The design process began with forensic analysis to assess retention options and select the best fabric-first reuse strategy. This drive was balanced by addressing Calton Square's sensitive context within its extraordinary location in Edinburgh’s New Town – adjacent to Calton Hill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Great to contribute to BCLP’s latest podcast episode exploring sustainable real estate. Partner Lee Bennett took Elyena (Nellie) de Goguel on a tour of our project at 245 Hammersmith Road, covering key design elements such as its shaded façade which reduces solar gain and energy use within the building. Sustainability Director Ruth Marsh spoke with Nellie about the importance of a holistic and evaluative approach to designing sustainably, as well as the need for greater urgency, clarity and consistency as we forge a path to net zero: “We have to start now with what we know and what we know we can do, and then we have to ratchet.” To listen to the podcast, click the link: https://lnkd.in/e_Gc5Y-K #routetonetzero #realestate
In the age of net zero, businesses are under pressure to reduce their carbon footprint, and all signs point towards real estate being a key battleground. But what makes a building sustainable? Hosted by Elyena (Nellie) de Goguel, our latest Client Intelligent Conversations podcast examines the evolving issue of sustainable real estate. Hear from leading industry voices including BCLP Real Estate Partner Chris de Pury, Katerina Papavasileiou, Director of ESG and Responsibility at Federated Hermes Limited, together with Sheppard Robson’s Chair of the practice’s Design Review Group, Lee Bennett, and Ruth Marsh, Sustainability Director.
