Hello everybody! This is our first post on our new Linkedin page, and we're calling on teachers, students, and anyone interested in decolonising education to support our mission here at the Voices Project. The Voices Project is an anti-racist, critical and inclusive teaching resource to be used in schools. It is a collaboration between students, teachers, community members and institutions, culminating in lesson plans and activities on the topics of identity; place; migration and empire. The Voices Project centres voices that aren't usually heard in the classroom using oral geographies as a way to learn with and across different communities.

In my book, 'Identity Affirming Classrooms,' I uplift many personal experiences including my time in a Reggio-inspired school as a kindergarten teacher. I studied the Reggio Emilia approach extensively as part of my collegiate level years (shoutout to Butler University College of Education) and dissertation. In Reggio (northern Italy), educators are taught to embrace the mindset that the child is capable, powerful, and has innate strengths. This concept is know as "the image of the child." 'Identity Affirming Classrooms' calls for educators to think about their image of youth. What experiences have shaped your beliefs about children and their capabilities? Do your actions in educational environments support or negate your constructed beliefs about children and educational justice? This is the mirror work we need to consider in our practice. An old picture of a former student and I really got me reflecting on the impact these young students had on me as an 8th grade English Teacher at the all boys preparatory academy. About four years ago I went to his high school to visit him and a few others just to see how they were doing. His class at the time was preparing him to take the SAT for college admissions. If you knew his story, you would know that when he was in my class, in the 8th grade, college was the furthest from his mind. Our huge smiles are a testament to his educational journey. One of the misconceptions about culturally responsiveness is that it is a deviation from the current curriculum and content of the classroom. Simply, that it is something else to do. When the reality is, that it is the pedagogy and the education, embedded within the curriculum and instruction, that allows some of our students to simply dream. To simply exist. To simply stay in school. To want to show up every single day, because they feel welcomed, so that their former teachers can stop by, years later, and say “Hi.” His class, my first group of students, was actually the start of my research focus. I’m not sure where he is in life at this time. Whether he went to college or entered trade school or the workforce. Whether he has a family or providing for himself. But, what I do know is that as I continue to do this work in shifting the educational landscape for students like him, I am reminded that this is my calling. I am meant to be here. To continue to advocate for students like him. At this time.
