This is a project that I have been working on over the last 18 months at Blackfriars Academy and although not quite 100% complete is almost there! The project concentrated on many different aspects of energy efficiently such as new Remeha Boilers and hot water plant, new Trend Control Systems building controls, the installation of a hydro-pool heat recovery ventilation system, upgrade to new LED Ansell Lighting and a thermal pool cover. Unlike some of my summer classroom and reception refurbishment projects, sometimes I think projects like these go unnoticed as the majority of the work goes on behind these scenes in the plant rooms & ceiling voids. This does not mean that projects such as these are any less important, it is essential that schools have reliable energy efficient heating, ventilation and hot water systems which avoids unnecessary breakdowns during winter. There is nothing more frustrating to see a school closed in winter due to heating issues. This energy efficiency project will save the school a substantial amount of money in gas and electric over the coming years, this money can be then used to educate the young people! *Long post alert My heart is often full as I do my daily work, but today was extra special. We were able to celebrate our school leaders as all schools had some area of growth in the newly released ODE report card data. We did the same last year, but the energy in the room was contagious and the excitement was breath-taking. You see, this year 68% of our elementary schools and 33% of our high schools had a 3 star or higher overall. The last time schools were given an overall rating it was an A-F system in 18-19, 46% of our schools were C or higher. Now we are on a 5 star system with 54% of our schools earning a 3 or higher this year, an 8% increase even after the pandemic. 63% of our elementary and 33% of our high schools earned 3 or more stars overall. We increased to 3 stars in gap closing, which means our students are getting closer to the performance of their suburban peers. (I don't like the measure but I did not create it so we will learn through it). 81% of our elementary schools earned 3 stars or higher and 39% of high schools. Yes, we are the highest of the other 8 urban school districts in Achievement and Early Literacy ( even though we declined in this area). Why do I share this? Because it is important that we recognize each win. When our numbers increase that means student outcomes are improving and that's what this is all about. A person that has never lead school change, overall improvement, has a lot of suggestions and input on what needs to and should happen. A person who has gotten to change but cannot articulate how it happened, generally cannot repeat it as the change was likely an accident. If a person has lead sustainable change, can articulate how it occurred and shepherd others through the process of improvement, growth is eminent. This is where we are right now. Growth is eminent. Our team is committed and is clear on next steps. More importantly, this kind of improvement causes them to follow the lead and #trusttheprocess. We had specific areas of intentional focus- core instruction with high quality standards aligned materials, robust teacher learning oportunitied and specific focus on data to address remediation and enrichment needs. Our leaders, teachers, staff and students bought in and the proof is in the improvement. We have a ways to go, but we are on the right track. This is where we need you. The report card is not the only measure of sucess, but it is one pretty important measure. At the start of the year, almost half of the third graders (43%) started the year with kindergarten-level phonics skills (3+ years below). At the end of the year 66% of 3rd graders had advanced one grade level or more. #structuredliteracy #reading #95percentgroup

You can't start presentation skills teaching too early.

As I step away from Berwickshire High School for the next year, I want to congratulate our school community on the superb progress we’ve made together in 4 years. Our school today is unrecognisable from the one that was rated three ‘Weak’s & an ‘Unsatisfactory’ in its 2019 inspection. Recent staff quotes help capture just how far we’ve come: - “Our school ethos is excellent.” - “Behaviour is very good and something we should be proud of.” - “This is by far the best professional learning offer of any school.” - “Staff CPD just gets better and better.” In the re-inspection, inspectors reported: “The quality and consistency of learning, teaching and assessment has improved considerably” and “The school environment now provides a calm, orderly context for learning”. We’ve got to where we are by focusing on the right things, in the right way: 1. The continuous improvement of teaching practice. 2. High-quality professional development, focused on teaching and learning. Supporting both is our ongoing focus on high standards of behaviour across our school. A real team effort, and one everyone involved should feel very proud of.

The Challenge? For the past two decades, business and industry leaders have expressed concerns about the lack of trained workforce. They believed public schools were dismissing career readiness by limiting vocational education opportunities, and were placing more emphasis on college ready courses and training. The Solution: In 2003, business and industry leaders in Maricopa County, Ariz., united to create the Western Maricopa Education Center, a partnership between 12 school districts, business and industry partners, and a governing board in Maricopa County.
