Celebrate your wins 🤩 This is super important… Whether it is something as little as drinking your water that day… To placing candidates in wonderful positions😁 It is such a positive thing to do for yourself… Not letting the small things get you down!✋🏼 I can’t lie… I did let things get to me last week… It was one of those weeks where everything didn’t go right!😫 But this week I feel a whole lot more positive… So, I’m encouraging you to put on those positive heads… And look on the bright side of everything! //Story Time\\ There's 2 work related opportunities that have made me the most anx this year, this is one and the other is still coming. And there's a fair bit I can encourage you on about showing up in your strength, standing firm in your power, the art of preparation and having confidence in your competence. But...that's not the story I want to tell. I want to tell you a story about consistency and putting the hours into your craft. When I was in gr 3 our class got assigned the play 101 Dalmatians. I remember wanting to play Anita; 1. Coz my bestie at the time wanted to (and we always did the same stuff), and 2. Because Cruella is mean and who wants to be the mean person. Anyway, my teacher suggested I audition for Cruella, so I did. I got the part and killed it. So much so that in gr 7 parents were still referring to me at the prefect who played Cruella. From my mini school play to, making announcements on stage or over the intercom, doing school pageants, participating in eisteddfod, debating and public speaking. Then speaking at church and volunteering teach kids ministry and youth and working in promotions at the mall on weekends, not to mention the hours of fake interviews/ talks in front of the mirror 😅...These are all years of honing my craft and getting a handle on my nerves. Every opportunity from auditioning for #sisterhood on ETV at 19, working in sales in my early 20s (cold calls and client pitches), a short stint on a news channel at 21, hosting an online business show in English and isiZulu at 22 (and producing the content) and hosting #CareerConnect on Business Day TV at 24 to being Miss SA 2nd Princess 2015 at 23, to speaking at #tedxcumbernauldwomen at 29 - and all throughout building my career as an #internationalspeaker and #facilitator working with clients from graduates to exco and mancom committees. These are my #10000hours that have built up to the career and #porfoliolife you see today. And today, the years of experience and building expertise in #resilience #enneagram #emotionalintelligence #effectivecommunication #personaldevelopment #leadership #socialimpact and #socialinnovation have lead to me joining faculty at Duke Corporate Education I'm grateful for the opportunity 🙏🏾 and look forward to continue writing my story.

Glad I could share the virtual stage last week with Dave J., Juan Bell Jr. and Jensine M. via the Black Product Managers Network in talking about our recent experiences with career transitions as Product Managers. I know many in tech have experienced job losses over the past year and the market remains brutal in many dimensions. This is what helped me manage my own transition: - Focus on companies and roles where you have a superpower. Volume shooting means less focus 🏀 - Find the humans in organizations like former colleagues, recruiters, and hiring managers. The ATS is not your friend. - If you get to an offer always negotiate something. Pick what matters to you and know your value. - In your 30-60-90, show your value and get something on the scoreboard. Talk to customers, ship something, measure the impact and tell the story.

I used to think that hard work was enough. That if I focused all my time and effort on becoming “smarter”, gaining new skills, or knowing everything about my domain… Acknowledgement and rewards would come to me. That wasn’t enough. I love frameworks, so I started leaning on Joseph Garfinkle's PVI (perception-visibility-influence) model to excel. After 8 years of using PVI myself to get 5 promotions and now using it in my work with clients, I’ve simplified it to two simple things you need to get great at if you want success in your career: 1) Building healthy networks and relationships (perception, visibility, & influence) 2) Self-advocacy (influence) Yes, developing expertise and actually doing good work IS important… But it’s also important to spend time developing relationships with people that are in a position to advocate for you and…you have to brag about yourself. (even if it feels weird or awkward to do 😖 ) ^ These are the things that make you stand out. So it’s something I help my clients to do every day. They get on the right people’s radar. They share the amazing work they’re doing. And in the process, they gain a reputation of being “leadership material”. So the next time you're about to put in a 12 hour day, ask yourself: → Am I also spending time networking & advocating for myself? If not, put that on your list this week.
