Dear Friends and Colleagues, We are pleased to share our session Call for Papers for the Royal Geographical Society-IBG Conference in London from Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 August 2024: Title: The Dark Matters: Mapping Human and Non-Human Interactions of Leisure and Tourism Dark Sky Conservation Session Organisers: Dr Jenny Hall, York St John University, UK Associate Professor, Dr Brendan Paddison, York St John University, UK Mike Hawtin, Head of Nature Recovery, North York Moors National Park, UK Sponsored by GLTRG (Geographies of Leisure and Tourism Research Group at RGS) The accelerated growth of light pollution has degraded the night-sky that harms human health, wildlife, and ecological systems. 90% of citizens in the United States and Europe live under light-polluted skies, with only 1% of this light considered useful (Foott, 2022). Although there has been a growing global movement to ‘protect the night’ from light pollution and the importance of dark-sky conservation has proliferated (Dark-Sky International, 2023) through the global development of dark sky parks and reserves, our knowledge about the effectiveness of conservation interventions is limited. The session aims to understand how leisure and tourism-based conservation initiatives and public engagement programmes can sustain dark-sky spaces and places. We welcome creative and novel papers. Please send abstracts (250 words) to Jenny Hall (j.hall@yorksj.ac.uk) & Brendan Paddison (b.paddison@yorksj.ac.uk). The deadline for submissions is Monday 26th February at midnight. The session is in person, but a hybrid option is available. Please indicate if you wish to present in person or virtually. #darksky #darkskies #astrotourism #darkness #lightpollution #darkskyresearch #darkskyconservation #alan #darkskyleisure #darkskycommunities #wellbeing #biodiversity #conservation #regenerativetourism #stewardship #slowtourism More information about the conference can be found via this link:https://lnkd.in/d5aaxAHa

The Grand Canyon, one of the world's most fascinating natural formations, is a vast and majestic landscape. No matter how many picture you've seen, seeing it with your own eyes is literally breathtaking ! Carved by the Colorado River, the canyon stretches over 440 km, reaching depths of over 1'600 m, and exposes nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history in its stratified bands. Lesser-known is that it's also home to the reclusive California condor, once nearly extinct, now soaring again over the canyon's rims. However, the Grand Canyon National Park is not just a testament to nature's unequaled artistic gift; it's also a site where the impact of tourism is increasingly felt. The park welcomes over five million visitors annually, a number putting immense pressure on the fragile desert ecosystem. Foot traffic erodes trails, human waste pollutes water sources, and the noise from tourism disrupts wildlife. As the park grapples with preserving its pristine beauty and accommodating visitors, it's clear that sustainable tourism practices are crucial. The Grand Canyon's future depends on balancing human interest with environmental stewardship, ensuring this natural wonder endures for generations to come. At sunset, the plain winds chills the scenery, but gives us the calm and quiet atmosphere to initiate our #learnanywhere session. #ExperienceMatters #EnvironementalManagement #ISO14001 PECB

Why Should I travel the world? Travelers are an important aspect of conservation in national parks because their presence promotes education, conservation funding, and economic growth. For instance, tourism at national parks creates job opportunities, such as park rangers and tour guides. In addition, tourism encourages the development of businesses surrounding the parks. Entrance fees and park activities contribute to revenue, incentivizing government bodies to invest in the development and maintenance of the parks. National parks are extremely popular and work to preserve natural ecosystems, making the simultaneous support of local economic growth and conservation efforts possible. #ecolab #eco-conscious #conservation #wildlifelovers #futureplanet #rwandaday2024 #africanwildlife #africanparks #volcanoesmationalpark #traveladvisor #travelgoals2024

“For thousands of years, humans have raced to be the first to scale a peak, cross a frontier, or document a new species or landscape. Now, in some cases, we’re racing to be the last,” reports Paige McClanahan for the @New York Times. Researchers are exploring the potential for last-chance tourism to inspire environmental stewardship, noting the importance of education and emotional engagement in shaping visitor behavior. However, challenges persist, including the ethical dilemma of whether travelers truly reckon with the harm they may inadvertently perpetuate. Alternatives like citizen science initiatives offer a hopeful path forward, empowering tourists to contribute meaningfully to conservation efforts while fostering a deeper connection to nature. #ClimateHope #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #ClimateOptimism #ClimateCommunication #Travel #SustainableTourism

We love seals. Many people do and seal-watching tourism is as popular as ever. But how does this impact the seals? A PhD student at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) in Aberdeen has began her research to find the answer - researching the effect of seal-watching tourism in Aberdeenshire. We're part-funding this research as part of our 2024 Main Grant fund, which you can read more about here: https://lnkd.in/eEQv_gNa 🦭 Claire will be spending a lot of time at Newburgh Seal Beach, observing the seal colony. Here's Claire, on the deal with the seals... "I’m looking into how different age groups and gender of seals use the beach and where they prefer to rest. To do this, I’m using drones to snap aerial photos of the colony. From these bird’s-eye views, we can estimate the seals’ age by their size, determine their sex by the colour of their fur, and see exactly where they like to chill." Knowing more about seal behaviour helps us understand our impact on them and how mindful we should be when observing these majestic animals. We can't wait to hear more from Claire's research and hope to up date you soon. Read more about Claire's research here https://lnkd.in/erCsh5N2

🏔️ The Cime Bianche valley in the Aosta Valley, Italy, stands as one of the last untouched treasures of the Western Alps. A proposed cable car project aiming to create an extensive ski area linking Italy and Switzerland has sparked intense conflict among various local stakeholders, each with their own interests and priorities. At an event on the 31st of January in the European Parliament, stakeholders convened to address the environmental, legal, and social implications of this project. From photographers and conservationists highlighting the valley's biodiversity to politicians discussing legal frameworks and environmental lawyers emphasizing regulatory compliance, the event shed light on the complexities surrounding this issue. As speakers delved into broader environmental concerns, including the impact of climate change on mountain regions and evolving trends in tourism, the meeting showed difficulties of reconciling these competing interests. In the face of mounting pressures, there's a resounding call to preserve the beauty of the Cime Bianche valley for future generations.
