In a recent conversation with a Product Mentee, I realised that we have all faced this challenge at some point. Whether you're at the beginning of your Product Management career or a Senior PM or VP of Products, there is a concern about effectively managing the Engineering Team. One of the lessons from my earliest Product Mentor: 📌 Observe patterns, identify the root cause – the actual illness, not just symptoms. The consistent solution which precedes the discovery of this is #Empathy. Deliberately interacting with your team members; identifying and recognising their challenges, emotions, and motivations. This promotes an environment based on mutual understanding. As you kick off the new year, prioritise integrating empathy as a Product Manager. It is key for navigating internal team frictions and achieving great product outcomes. #ProductManager #ProductManagement #Leadership

It was during this time that I crossed paths with Nael, who was actively seeking a junior PM. From our initial interaction, it quickly became evident that Nael possessed a unique leadership approach. Rather than simply evaluating my suitability for the role, Nael invested time in comprehending my aspirations, meticulously guiding me through the decision-making process. Tell me if you have ever experienced this: You get an opportunity to work on a product or project you believe could be huge in impact. The work isn’t just difficult—you believe all of the work will be worth it because the end state will be so amazing. It is the kind of work we hope for: the game changer. This kind of project takes a while--probably over a year. But again, it will all be worth it in the end. You work through the obstacles, the unexpected delays, moments of doubt, and even the crisis point most big efforts see before ending in success. The real surprise comes at the end. It’s over! Finally the big goal is yours. The win belongs to you and all of your colleagues who made it happen. You celebrate together as you should…but something is missing. This “big win” doesn’t feel big any longer. It feels anti-climactic in some way. Many of us go on the hunt for that next big win—chasing that feeling we had in the beginning. And we go through the same cycle. What is going on here? Personally, this pattern has encouraged me to make a couple of changes in approach and expectations. First, I do my best to enjoy the journey with my colleagues—there is a lot to enjoy together, and you don’t have to wait until the end. Second, I also reflect on what I have learned along the way. Those takeaways can last while completing a milestone is just a moment in time. Did you know that this week (May-15) was International Product Day? As a Product Leader, people often ask me how I got started in this field. It all began with building a strong foundation in software development and project management. After honing my technical and leadership skills and working closely with customers, my business acumen and strategic thinking grew. When my first offer to become a product manager came along, I refused it due to bad timing. I knew I needed to be consistent and wait for the right opportunity that aligned with my career goals. When the second offer came along, I seized it. Here are my five tips for aspiring product managers: * Continuously develop your technical skills. Never stop! * Gain a deep understanding of business strategy * Build a strong professional network.
