👩💼 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗼: 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗫𝗥 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 With over three decades in tech, including roles at Microsoft and Verizon, Lani Bertino now excels at Trigger, a leading XR agency, as VP of Production. Her journey underscores professional adaptability and a commitment to promoting diversity in STEM fields. Lani is a strong advocate for women in technology, mentoring women in XR and promoting diversity on speaking panels. “When I started at Microsoft in 1995, women made up a fraction of the tech workforce. That number remained unchanged 23 years later, despite a strong recruiting effort by the company. Attracting and retaining are two different things.” Lani reflects. “We women need all the support we can get, which is why mentoring women in XR is so important to me.” ⭐️ 𝗔 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Lani’s career began at Microsoft, where she worked on key products like Windows, Internet Explorer, and MSN. She later joined Verizon to explore XR applications in the healthcare and enterprise industries, laying the groundwork for her role at Trigger. “One key factor in Trigger’s success is our commitment to quality and adaptability,” Lani explains. “We’ve been early adopters in XR and continuously evolve with the industry. Projects like AI-driven NPCs for the Alpine audio Roblox experience and Molson Coors’ WebAR BigFoot showcase this blend of technology and user experience. “Integrating AI is a core tenet for Trigger,” Lani says. “For Alpine, we created AI-driven NPCs that interact with users about products and music passions.” Lani also has a personal passion for game design. She developed a card game, “Zeus’s Revenge,” inspired by Greek mythology. “Creating ‘Zeus’s Revenge’ was a labor of love,” Lani shares. “The hardest part isn’t making the game—it’s selling it.” Despite its near completion, marketing challenges remain. “Be open and unafraid of change. It’s not just the tech industry that suffers from the “brilliant jerk” atmosphere. It is impossible to work with people like this and it makes going to work hell. The craziest thing is, most people who exhibit this kind of behavior are otherwise ordinary people. People point at tech billionaires as leading examples of “brilliant jerks”. The reality is much more mundane. I don’t think it’s just a character flaw, though. People fall into professional environments where they feel like they need to totally crush their “competition” (i.e. their coworkers) in order to justify their role and prove their value. While you’re in the middle of it, it’s just difficult to find the courage to call it out. You run up against people who have built their lives on ruining anyone who challenges them. In most cases the situation is too far gone to be able to do anything about it. I wish anyone going through that the best of luck. The unfortunate fact is that there probably isn’t anything you can even do about it. I want to write something positive and encouraging, but I don’t have anything to say. You just have to get away from it. It costs nothing to be kind to others.

I recently learned about the Sailing Stones in Death Valley - if you haven't heard about them before, it's worth a read (link in comments). It got me thinking about what it's like to be a woman in the tech industry. Like the winding and suddenly shifting trails left by the Sailing Stones, our paths in this industry can be unpredictable and full of obstacles. Despite our qualifications and talents, we may encounter systemic biases, gender stereotypes, and unequal opportunities that impede our progress. The breakthrough moment in the Sailing Stones mystery came when a NASA scientist, Ralph Lorenz, developed a simple yet ingenious model (involving Tupperware!) to explain the phenomenon. Similarly, women in tech often find themselves innovating and problem-solving in environments that are not always welcoming or inclusive, sometimes forcing us to find a creative and obscure solution to a problem. Just as the Sailing Stones are propelled by the forces of nature, women in tech are driven by our passion, determination, and resilience. Despite the adversities we face, we continue to push forward, leaving our mark on the tech landscape and inspiring future generations of women to pursue careers in STEM. Let's embrace the spirit of the Sailing Stones – resilient, adaptable, and always moving forward – as we navigate the challenges of the tech industry. Together, we can break down barriers, shatter stereotypes, and create a more equitable and inclusive future for women in tech.

Happy International Women's Day! As my esteemed colleague Tatum O'Kennedy at Seeq Corporation says so well below: "Women in tech are driven by our passion, determination, and resilience" There are 5 things that I would advise to other women and men in the tech space to do that reinforces that passion, determination, and resilience so we don't lose it! - Mentor a colleague - give back...the rewards are 10 fold for all involved. - Listen and prioritize clarity. Women often need a bit more clarity to feel empowered to drive change in an organization. - Seek out companies that prioritize DEI and whose actions walk the talk. - Celebrate the men and women around you. Even one comment of support in the room to something a colleague has said, boosts that confidence to speak their mind and share smart ideas. - Encourage collaboration and partnering to achieve the goals. What we do every day is hard, we can drive the passion by sharing the effort to accomplish more.
