👩💼 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗼: 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗫𝗥 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 With over three decades in tech, including roles at Microsoft and Verizon, Lani Bertino now excels at Trigger, a leading XR agency, as VP of Production. Her journey underscores professional adaptability and a commitment to promoting diversity in STEM fields. Lani is a strong advocate for women in technology, mentoring women in XR and promoting diversity on speaking panels. “When I started at Microsoft in 1995, women made up a fraction of the tech workforce. That number remained unchanged 23 years later, despite a strong recruiting effort by the company. Attracting and retaining are two different things.” Lani reflects. “We women need all the support we can get, which is why mentoring women in XR is so important to me.” ⭐️ 𝗔 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Lani’s career began at Microsoft, where she worked on key products like Windows, Internet Explorer, and MSN. She later joined Verizon to explore XR applications in the healthcare and enterprise industries, laying the groundwork for her role at Trigger. “One key factor in Trigger’s success is our commitment to quality and adaptability,” Lani explains. “We’ve been early adopters in XR and continuously evolve with the industry. Nothing goes out the door unless it meets our high standards.” 📲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗫𝗥 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 At Trigger, Lani integrates AI into XR experiences, enhancing user interactions. Projects like AI-driven NPCs for the Alpine audio Roblox experience and Molson Coors’ WebAR BigFoot showcase this blend of technology and user experience. “Integrating AI is a core tenet for Trigger,” Lani says. “For Alpine, we created AI-driven NPCs that interact with users about products and music passions.” Lani also has a personal passion for game design. She developed a card game, “Zeus’s Revenge,” inspired by Greek mythology. “Creating ‘Zeus’s Revenge’ was a labor of love,” Lani shares. “The hardest part isn’t making the game—it’s selling it.” Despite its near completion, marketing challenges remain. “Be open and unafraid of change. Embrace a diverse set of skills, and articulate what makes you unique. The industry is evolving, and a broad perspective will make you valuable.” — Lani Bertino #Trigger #WomenInXR #STEM #XR #Inclusion #XRWiki #STEMLeadership #WomenInTech #XRInnovation #MentorshipInTech #DiversityInSTEM #TechAdvocate #AIAndXR #CareerInTech #WomenEmpowerment #GameDesign

The data speaks for itself: women are making strides in tech! Women account for 14% of the global cloud computing workforce. In engineering, women make up 20% of the workforce, and in data and AI, the share of women is 32%. At 33%, virtual reality (VR) projects have the highest share of female developers. Augmented reality (AR) projects and games rank second at 28%. Backend services and web application projects have the lowest concentration of female coders, at just 13% and 16%, respectively. Women make up 21% of the C-suite in corporate America. This is up from 17%. Let’s continue to empower and support women in tech this International Women’s Day. From Margins to Mainstream: Women's Empowerment in the Digital Era – Web 3.0 may offer inclusion for all, but it's still rare for women to be included at the table in key #metaverse, #blockchain, and virtual technologies. As AI entrepreneur, advisor, and thought leader Dr. Ayesha Khanna writes: "Despite women making up 49.5% of the world’s population, they only hold 26.7% of tech-related jobs. Only 8.8% of Fortune 500 CEOs are female, while female-only start-ups receive as little as 2% of investment capital each year. Additionally, the number of women in the tech industry decreased by 2.1% between 2020 and 2021. With this, you can observe that the playing field is certainly not level for women in the tech industry, and that pattern is now following into the metaverse. The fact that there is a gender gap in organizations that aim to create the 'framework' for the metaverse indicates that the same biases will also be present in the framework. For example, the Open Metaverse Alliance for Web 3.0 and the Metaverse Standards Forum are examples of such bodies, with only 8-10% of member organizations being led by female executives. In December 2021, out of the 121 listed founders of crypto’s big names, only 5 were female. Hence, Web 3.0 and the metaverse have also been locking out women." But the future isn't entirely bleak. In the article, Dr. Khanna shouts out to LAMINA1 CEO Rebecca Barkin as a rare exception to the rule, alongside fellow industry powerhouses Mariam Nusrat, Cathy Hackl, Asmita Dubey, Vanessa Mullin & Joanna Popper. Not only that, but recent data shows that today, women are actually more active in the metaverse, and more likely to adopt it. As per McKinsey, 41% of women, compared to 34% of men, participated in or used a primary metaverse or digital world. Compared to men, they are also 20% more likely to carry out a variety of metaverse-related efforts. 🌍 The importance of representation and ethical considerations when creating AI avatars 🌍 ... 𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺, 𝘪𝘧 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 #emmatravelsgermany 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘨𝘯 😉 The #emmatravelsgermany campaign by the German Tourism Board (DZT) has generated considerable debate - and for good reason. Their AI-generated avatar, Emma, was designed to promote Germany as a travel destination. There has already been quite some conversation about AI replacing humans' jobs, we do not want to repeat here, and we don't want to diminish how much effort must have gone into the AI-animation. However, there is another interesting aspect to this conversation: Choosing a blonde "conventionally attractive" woman as the face of the campaign raises important questions about 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗔𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲, 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗜’𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆. Here’s how we would have approached the AI-campaign differently: 1️⃣ 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: Instead of a single avatar, we might have showcased Emma as part of a diverse couple, a group of friends, or a family, showing different age groups, religions, sexual orientations or ethnicities. This would offer diverse perspectives, highlighting Germany as a destination for all types of travelers, and creating relatable content for a broader audience. 2️⃣ 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹: If we would have wanted to create a single avatar like Emma to better build connections, we would have at least introduced a series of other avatars Emma meets on her journey: Each tailored to specific regions of Germany, without reproducing stereotypes. We also would have featured avatars that highlight accessibility, such as travelers with disabilities. By showing ramps, accessible public transportation, or activities designed for different needs, the campaign would not only be diverse but also emphasize inclusivity. 3️⃣ 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆: Beyond aesthetics, we’d ensure that Emma’s experiences present the diverse cultural heritage and hidden gems across Germany - not just the iconic landmarks. This would invite travelers to discover the country through a rich and authentic lens. 💭 We are curious - What is your take on #Emma? How do you approach the topic of representation and diversity in AI-generated content? Feel free to start a conversation in the comments! #AIforAll #EthicalLeadership #AIEthics #MagnoliaTree #AI

"𝗪𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘀. 𝗬𝗲𝘀, 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆!" said she. Hey All, Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Microsoft, Noida and attend a thought-provoking session by Shivangi Pande on 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 at the #SyncDesign event. What she had to say was a real eye-opener. Here are 3️⃣ 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲: 💡 Shivangi shared stories which resonated so well. Like, we all might have seen our left-handed friend struggle with a right-handed writing-chair, or someone watching anime with subtitles, not because they're deaf, but because it's just more convenient when you don't know Japanese or Korean languages. These everyday scenarios tell us about diversity & WHY inclusion matters! 🌈 Secondly, we often only know what WE know! This is where the next principle comes into play— 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 (I call it the 3B Mantra). 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 > 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 > 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗻𝗲, 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆 🔄 𝗘𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Shivangi also discussed how the term "Disability" has evolved over time. Once perceived simply as a lack of physical ability in the 1980s, it is now understood as a much more complex phenomenon with societal dimensions in 2024. It consists of a spectrum of situational, temporary, and permanent disabilities. And indeed, if NASA can send messages into space for potential alien encounters, why can't we be more thoughtful in our designs here on Earth? Let's have empathy for everyone who calls this planet a home (and maybe even for aliens, lol). Each individual deserves to be seen, heard, and valued. #Accessibility #InclusiveDesign #SyncDesign2024 🌍✨
