Direct industry experience isn’t the ‘ Be-All and End-All’ in sales. As someone who has spent decades in sales- including years as a hiring manager, I’ve seen a recurring mistake all too often made by hiring managers: over-prioritizing direct industry experience at the expense of overall professional sales expertise, business acumen and….savvy! Sales success isn’t about intimate familiarity with every detail of an industry—it’s about the ability to build relationships, solve problems, and drive results. Sales professionals with a track record of success have honed these skills across various sectors, and the principles of great selling—listening to customer needs, negotiating value, and fostering long-term partnerships—are universal. 3 common mistakes companies make when hiring sales professionals: ▶ Forgetting that while they’re evaluating the candidate, the candidate is evaluating their company and its sales environment and culture. ▶ Not picking the right candidate based on the company’s current stage and needs (example for a sales leadership role: a start-up with growing teams and the need to create new systems from scratch is hiring someone with experience in leading teams in an established corporation with systems already in place). ▶ Underestimating the importance of cultural fit: someone who comes from an entrepreneurial sales culture loses vitality in controlled, process-driven cultures; and those who come from cultures of closely managed sales activity will struggle to fit into a highly results-focused culture (unless a company is trying to change its sales culture, culture compatibility is an important hiring criterion) #salesrecruiting #recruiting #sales #hr
