I don’t believe people know that 99 percent of the 10,000+ additives in the American food supply have not been studied. I recently read from a reliable source that 1,000 of these additives are deemed unfit for human consumption and banned in other countries. Do you know that the FDA gave the food companies the authority to decide what additives are safe to put in our food supply? The FDA relinquished its duty to the entities it was supposed to regulate in the Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) provision to a 1958 amendment aimed to provide better protection from deadly food and misleading claims from unscrupulous food companies. Fast forward to 2024: toxic additives in our food supply are causing sickness, suffering, and premature death among Americans who rely heavily on ultra-processed foods. Nearly 70% of Americans’ daily caloric intake is ultra-processed foods which are chemical-laced, devitalized, and nutrient-deficient. Big Food poisons us for profi. As recently as the mid-2000s, the term ‘ultra-processed foods’ – or UPFs – was only just starting to enter into public lexicon. Fast forward fifteen years, and these highly manufactured goods account for a huge percentage of all the food consumed within the UK. For the average person in the UK now, about half of the calories they intake are made up of ultra-processed foods. This means a significant portion of a person’s energy intake consists only of these foods, that largely contain high levels of salt, sugar and saturated fats and are wholly devoid of the natural and healthy nutrients we need. What is an ultra processed food? Not everything in a packet or a tin is UPF Why should we try and avoid UPF’s? 🚨 Important Health Update🚨 The FDA has officially banned the use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food items, effective August 2, 2024. This decision follows extensive studies conducted in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health, revealing the potential for adverse health effects in humans. BVO, a chemical containing bromine (also found in fire retardants), has been used in small quantities in some citrus-flavored drinks to maintain flavor distribution. However, concerns over its safety have led to this decisive action. Notably, BVO has been banned in the UK, India, the EU, and Japan for years. Many beverage makers, including PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, have already phased out BVO from products like Gatorade and Fanta. Yet, some brands, such as Sun Drop by Keurig Dr Pepper, continue to use it.
