The journey through the NICU for a preterm infant is one that requires meticulous neuroprotective measures to optimize outcomes. Neurodevelopmental supportive care (NDSC) is a well-researched topic, and extensive evidence is available on its benefits in terms of infant, parental, and family outcomes. As with other areas of healthcare, a single solution is seldom effective; but a bundle of actions offers greater chances of success for the newborn to survive and thrive. Nothing prepared me for being a breastfeeding mother in the NICU. I had breastfed 3 kids for 18 months or more with no problems, but when #4 was born, he was not able to breastfeed for weeks. I was pump dependent and that was incredibly challenging. Fortunately, we were able to successfully breastfeed for 2.5 years with no supplementation, but that is rarely the case for the NICU families I care for. ✨ Optimised NICU units support improved outcomes! Utilising specific design elements enhances neonatal care by fostering the 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲'𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 during their stay. 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 can improve both, short- and long-term outcomes for preterm infants. This is why the design of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) is an essential part of preterm health. Design suggestions include: each 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬, incorporating a comfortable chair and a hospital bed for parents adjacent to the infant's cot. Furthermore, dedicated 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 for families, as well as 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐬 are recommended. NICU planning should aim to: 🤝 support 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭- 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲-𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐝 developmental care, 👩⚕️ provide safe and 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 for all healthcare professionals, and 🚷 improve 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐲, leading to reduced stress and increased parent-infant closeness.
