Be Productive in Retirement! I always say that "busy people are not productive, effective people are not too busy". Squeezing several commitments in one day is always a challenge. I had one of those days this weekend – had a project review and site visit, rendered a lecture to an MBA class and attended an Alumi function. I can mark this one as one of those effective and productive weekends for me. As a retired person, who still wants to be professionally engaged while enjoying the liberties of retirement, it was important that: 1.   At the outset I determined and planned what business, social, civic and outreaches I will be engaged in, and how much time I was willing to put into them. 2.   I established regular schedule of engagements and marked them on my calendar ahead of time: projects, lectures, outreaches, consulting and family activities. 3.   If the commitments happen to be unavoidably bunched together in a day, prepare for them in advance. I put together the lecture I delivered this weekend last week, then I flexed my project review earlier than normal so that I have time to nap and get energized for a long alumni evening. 4.   I set up routine for social and sports activities. I golf with two sets of golf buddies in two clubs. The dates are sacrosanct. I look forward to them. 5.   Things can get awry sometimes and mess up my calendar. They happen. I learned not to get uptight. There will always be another day. #retirement #leadership #lessonsilearned

It is hard to believe, but I am approaching the one-year anniversary of my retirement from corporate life! There is nothing wrong with being “all-in” in your job. In fact, I would highly recommend it, as that approach worked very well for me throughout my career. But I just want to encourage those transitioning out of a full-time corporate role that there is a world of opportunity awaiting. Perhaps different from what you envisioned, but equally, if not more, fulfilling. My transition has enabled me to focus on things that I just never had time to do previously. Whether it is mentoring at my alma mater Grove City College, tutoring high school algebra locally, consulting, or my woodworking and photography hobbies; post-corporate life has been tremendously rewarding. If you are approaching retirement, it is worth your time to think about where you want to focus your passion and energy when your current professional role ends. What clients can benefit from your experience? What local causes do you feel strongly about? Does your spiritual life need attention? What hobbies excite you? What relationships would benefit from additional focus? Many of us spent a great deal of time in either training for our careers or developing/managing them. That same investment in retirement activity planning will pay similar dividends. Including a picture of a recently completed woodworking project as an example (primarily because I know the likelihood of anybody reading this is significantly higher if I include a picture!!) My working career spanned 37 years. My post-corporate life could conceivably last nearly as long. I feel blessed to have had such a great start.

One of my mentors retired this month and it left me pondering about our life journey. This is one person who achieved the cream of their career life and he was transitioning to now something out of the corporate world. For most people, the transition is not usually an easy one because we get so used and comfortable to the corporate world that we hardly remember that one day one time, we will be out of the system. However with better and early planning, this journey may seem to be manageable. Because of his love for farming, my mentor retired to his farm to now be actively involved in his projects which he started about 5 years as something he could transition to. What do I learn from my mentor? ⏭ Create something that can take care of you after your retirement, it could be just from your passion. ⏭ Life is full of seasons, live to your fullest in all seasons of your life. ⏭ As you pursue a career, having investments that can take care of you when you retire is a must. ⏭ You only live once but if you live right, once is enough. Ensure you plan your life and pursue a purpose beyond yourself. ⏭You don't need to be 40 or 50 to start planning for your retirement, start as early as you get your first job. ⏭You need to nurture relationships outside your career life like family, freinds, community etc. What are your thoughts about retirement, how best can someone prepare for this journey that everyone of us will get to? Last week marked a significant milestone in my life as I attended a retirement event for the second time – that of my mother-in-law. It was a moment filled with mixed emotions, as colleagues spoke with deep respect about her years of hard work, dedication, and invaluable learnings. Have you ever been on the Fast Lane on the road only to find that you can't move ahead because of a vehicle in front of you, immediate or even a few vehicles in front are blocking your journey or slowing you down towards your destination? (Let not pull in the speed limit story.. we are all law abiders here). So what do you do? You have to flash some lights politely. Or... you just had to take the inner lane or slower lane to over take. The same applies in your career or business. Sometimes you just had to take a different lane even if it seems like a slower lane to make to the destination that we want. This is what I am doing. I have become an Entrepreneur in Training & Coaching in the Health Education industry (from a senior management in an Oil & Gas MNC). I have switched lane to what may seems to be a slower lane now but I can see clearly where this lane is taking me towards my destination. Towards the future that I want. At a pace that I want, that there shall be no slower vehicles in front of me blocking me or slowing me down. I have switched lane so that I don't have to work to look forward to retirement. It is sad that many are working so hard in hope for a retirement. I have switched lane to where my personal development is my own responsibility & provocative. I have switched lane where my promotion & bonus are my decision & my own hard work. I don't have to wait for the Boss or Board to approve based on their appraisal or budget. I have switched lane where I increase my income every day, every week, every month. I dont have to wait for the annual increment, if any. I have switched lane where I choose to do what I am passionate about that I enjoy doing all the time. Because to me it is not a job. Hence I don't need to apply for leave or wait for public holidays. I have switched lane where I can see my future. The future that I want. The future where I achieve my #7FsLifeGoals. Where I know my income don't halt at "retirement". Whatever that you are working on right now, what happens when you retire? Will your income stop? Will your standard of living lowers? When contemplating new beginnings, it takes time, research, and planning. Whether that be changing careers, starting a new job, planning for retirement, or starting a business. I know, it took me through all of the above to feel great about my next chapter. In my previous career as a Comptroller, I resisted thinking about retirement or a next chapter. All I knew was I still wanted to feel viable, contributing and the desire to save people time finding their path forward.
