Usually, histories of life introduce us to creatures in sequence, showing how Earth’s menagerie has changed with time. But the philosopher of science Peter Godfrey-Smith’s goal is to show how different forms of life have altered the planet, changing it physically, creating the conditions for the creatures that follow, beginning with cyanobacteria adding oxygen to the atmosphere and ending with climate change. The idea is to give us a better sense of the space we occupy together, and of our linked and ongoing responsibility for it. I think understanding Ocean Science is more crucial in todays day and age, given the fact how ecosystems are being destroyed and damaged and people are still dumping trash and oil spills are still happening which is quite sad. We need to act forward.

The first string asks how ‘regenerative action’ is relevant in relation to sustainability, climate change, and the metacrisis – aka the politics in a wide sense, The second string looks at the ontological challenge that I find emerges from adopting a regenerative perspective on the world – aka the black holes and deep waters of an ontological shift. Many thanks to Dr. Sarah Kapnick, Chief Scientist at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and from S&P Global Dr. Terence Thompson, Chief Science Officer and Dr. Paul Gruenwald, Global Chief Economist for their webcast: Beyond ESG with Navigating Climate-Related Financial Risk. The linkage between Natural Capital and sustainable growth resonated with me. This was reinforced by my recent viewing of ROOTED: FAMILY AND NATURE IN CONTEMPORARY CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATION an exhibit of 8 children’s book illustrators at the Brandywine  Museum of Art (see my first comment below to link to the exhibit). Several of the books and illustrations emphasize the importance of natural capital and sustainability. I did not realize that George Washington Carver was an early advocate of sustainability as an economic driver. One take-away from the webcast is the advances in data sources from NOAA and its partners on climate and the economy.
