Just reading the interesting EU report Monitoring the twin transition of industrial ecosystems, AGRI-FOOD. It seems things are picking up - at least in many parts of Europe. But I need to bash my home, Sweden. With some of the best pre-conditions around for making a transition into the next gen food system nothing much happens under the current government and its so-called innovation authorities. Do take a look at this picture, Vinnova, and explain to me how on Earth this can be the case in 2024. Any basic strategic insights you would like to share that can motivate this glaring absence of focus on one of the main topics of our time? https://lnkd.in/d3WKywnp

The #EUBioeconomy Strategy was born in Brussels, but it lives in the European regions. In last week’s Rhine-Meuse-Forum “The Green Deal, and now? The contribution of circular bioeconomy and renewable resources” I could testify the great support #bioeconomy enjoys in the regions along the rivers Rhine and Meuse. The interventions by policymakers, bioeconomy entrepreneurs and researchers made it very clear: bioeconomy is a natural enabler of the #EUGreenDeal. And, there is no bioeconomy without farmers, foresters and other actors in rural areas! Participants presented bioeconomy start-ups and projects from the regions and it became once again evident that the bioeconomy can create new and sustainable value added chains. We heard exciting examples driven by the strong determination to implement regional bioeconomy strategies e.g. by PROSERVATION, a start-up offering alternative packaging and cushioning materials valorising grain husks, the wrapping of cereal grains. Thanks to Land Baden-Württemberg and Région Grand Est for this very interesting day. I invite all stakeholders to work together with us on the bioeconomy of the future… stay tuned! https://lnkd.in/eWcfYGVq

Webinar 2nd – Green & Blue Economy On May 14th, the ORIGINN project hosted a webinar on the topic of the Green Economy. The purpose of the webinar was to showcase Good Practices from the seven regional authorities who make up the ORIGINN consortium. Moderated by Dr Geraldine Brennan of CirculÉire, Ireland’s national platform for circular manufacturing, the webinar featured a full agenda of diverse and interesting presentations. Each partner invited a local stakeholder to present their Good Practice, and these were followed by a lively questions and answers session. The webinar was attended by 54 participants, including policy-makers, industry actors, and civil society organisations, spanning three time zones across Europe. They tuned in to hear about organic farmers organising for policy improvement in Estonia, and the cutting-edge Bioeconomy Hub in Catalonia; they heard about Emilia-Romagna’s policies to drive the development of the blue economy, and Jämtland Härjedalen’s innovative project to develop circular business models; they took a tour through Centru’s agri-tourism heartland, and learned about a great example of public-private partnership for circular manufacturing in Prešov. While the Good Practices presented covered a variety of issues and policy areas, the common element was the innovative nature of the interventions they described. Innovation which is at the heart of ORIGINN’s mission to support sustainable and transformative development of our rural communities. #bioeconomy #blueeconomy #circular #circulareconomy #Greeneconomy #Innovation #Rural #Sustainabledevelopment #Sustainableinnovation

A Resilient and Sustainable Food System The panel discussion on 20 March will discuss resilience and sustainability in the Swedish Food system with international outlooks. The panel will talk about how Sweden works to make the food system more resilient and sustainable. How does the farmers and food producers work? What are the challenges? How do we work with our soil to keep it fertile in the long term? Resilience is important to cope with climate changes that increasingly puts pressure on the agricultural land. Water supply and effects on waters downstream by agriculture is of increasing importance in Sweden, and abroad. Lantmännen, an agricultural cooperative owned by 18 000 Swedish farmers, is one important driver of the development in the Swedish food system. Listen to Jennie Barron, Claes Johansson and Line Gordon. We have a choice: invest $500 billion annually into transforming our food systems towards sustainability by 2050 or face a staggering $10 trillion annual cost for inaction. The sums needed for long-term transformation sound scary, but the sums needed if we don’t do anything are even scarier, they just come up less often. Our current #foodsystems, burdened by hidden environmental and medical costs, are in essence borrowing from our future for short-term gains. A recent comprehensive report by the Food System Economics Commission reveals these results and advocates for redirecting subsidies and incentives towards sustainable #farming practices, supporting farmers to create #carbon sinks and to enhance #biodiversity. 🌱 Our work at Klim in scaling regenerative agriculture isn’t just about lowering emissions in food supply chains; it's about securing long-term food supply and ensuring a prosperous future for all. As one of the researchers, Johan Rockström from the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, reminded us, "The global food system holds the future of humanity on Earth in its hand." 🌎 Read more in this report: https://lnkd.in/eS-SjY5D

📢 Excited to share that David Robert Newman FCIWM from the #EuropeanBioeconomyBureau represented Brilian at the 14th International Experts' Conference #ENVIROMANAGEMENT2024 in the stunning High Tatras, Slovakia! 🌍✨ This year’s theme, “MANAGING SOLID WASTE AND RESOURCES PROPERLY... failing to plan is planning to fail,” highlighted the complexities of waste and recycling projects. During his presentation on “Update on EU Policies – The New Europe: What the Brussels landscape is likely to look like,” among other topics, David showcased how the Brilian supports sustainable and cooperative business models in rural areas. By valorizing agricultural by-products, we aim to enhance rural development, promote biodiversity, and facilitate the transition to bio-based economies. 🌱 Through our cooperative pilots working with ten value chains, we’re turning primary producers into vital players in the supply chain, aligning with key EU strategies. 5moJohan Jörgensen whenever you need to understand strategic policies, use this framework: - Societal challenges create new market demands. - New market demands drive public policy. - Public policy drives grants. - Grants drive research. - Research drives new technology. - New technology drive new markets. - New markets drive private investment. The better a topic fits this loop at any point in time... The more likely it is to have the full force of the government behind. Right now in Sweden it’s all about digitalisation and resource efficiency. Can you tell why by using that framework?
