We often fail to realize the impact our work has on the world, especially when we are deep in the midst of "doing the work". Building the first new reactors in 30 years in the USA was a labor of love by many. Our efforts were not in vain, and we are now beginning to see how we have influenced the world around us to take monumental steps toward nuclear power as part of its future. https://lnkd.in/e9r_jxtP

The two new advanced AP1000® PWR reactors at Plant Vogtle were named “Power Plant of the Year” by POWER magazine, well-deserved recognition for Southern Nuclear, Georgia Power Company and the tremendous effort by thousands of professionals who contributed to the project. Vogtle Units 3 and 4 both came online in the last 12 months. The magazine highlighted the reactors’ awesome performance so far. “Vogtle Unit 3’s initial performance has exceeded our expectations,” John Williams, Southern Nuclear senior vice president for Vogtle 3 and 4, told POWER. “Since it began commercial operation in July 2023, Unit 3 has operated at greater than 98% capacity factor, running at 100% since commercial operation was declared with the exception of a planned five-day maintenance outage.” That exceeds the #NuclearEnergy industry average of 93% capacity! Combined, the two AP1000 reactors are churning out enough clean energy to power 1 million homes. AtkinsRéalis has entered into an agreement with Third Qinshan Nuclear Power Company Limited (TQNPC) to support the ongoing 30-year life extension of the two CANDU reactors at the Qinshan Nuclear Generating Station in China. As part of the mandate, our Nuclear business will provide design, engineering, and procurement services in support of the project. As the original equipment manufacturer and steward of CANDU technology, AtkinsRéalis was a member of the project team that originally built the reactors at Qinshan. They came into service on time and on budget — as is the case for the last seven CANDU units built around the world. Our CANDU life extension reactor support business is a $15 billion total addressable market that could include 19 CANDU reactors over the next 10 years. As the sole commercial licensee of the Canadian-owned CANDU intellectual property portfolio, AtkinsRéalis is the only organization that has taken a leading role in all CANDU reactor life extension projects to date globally. Energy Secretary Granholm champions partnership with clean nuclear power industry at launch of next generation reactors in Georgia In touting the climate benefits of the project, the secretary observed that 10 million metric tons of carbon emissions will be avoided annually; equivalent to planting 165 million trees each year. U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm gave a full-throttled endorsement for the future of a clean U.S. Nuclear Industry in recent remarks delivered at the startup of the Vogtle Unit 4 in Waynesboro, Georgia. In pointing to the landmark significance of the project, the secretary noted that the launch of Unit 4 makes Vogtle the largest source of carbon-free power on U.S. electric grid, and will safely power the region’s economy for generations. Moreover, Vogtle 3 and 4 represent the first nuclear reactors built from scratch in the U.S. in more than a generation and were based on innovative reactor designs used for the first-time. Georgia Power announced that Unit 4 involved the expansion of their existing Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant has achieved the ability to reach initial critically safely. The following achievement overall demonstrates that Georgia Power can start up the nuclear reaction at Unit 4 within the expansion unit’s second reactor. The safety test of the plant’s initial critical further enforces the plant’s ability to generate an appropriate amount of heat that will later be generated into electricity. The safety testing milestone brings Unit 4 at Vogtle closer to commercial operation, which is expected to take place during quarter 2 of 2024. The development of expanding the Vogtle nuclear site and completing Unit 4 follows the energization of the project’s Unit 3 back in July of 2023. Overall, the expansion of Georgia Power’s Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant will generate enough electricity to power approximately 500,000 homes and businesses within the surrounding communities, while providing clean, efficient, and affordable energy to Georgia Power’s 2.7 million customers. #nuclear #powerplant #nuclearenergy #electricpower #energy #GeorgiaPower #georgia #MAPSearch #ENvision
