We were delighted to host Macquarie University’s clinical science students for their PACE placement at Jointli. Lauren, Josh, and Keelin immersed themselves in the dynamic environment of Landmark Orthopaedics, engaging in educational tasks and gaining valuable insights. From viewing orthopaedic consultations at The Knee Institute and following a patient's rehab session at Jointli to exploring cutting-edge technology at Personalised Surgery, they gained a comprehensive view of the patient journey. They also gained insight into ongoing research initiatives, including a demonstration of our advanced motion capture lab and experiencing our return-to-sport testing technologies. Their passion for healthcare and eagerness to learn were truly inspiring. We are confident that these students will make significant contributions to the future of medical science. Best of luck to each of them on their exciting career paths! As our labs generate a massive amount of clinical data, maintaining high-quality data is paramount. We utilize databases to implement rigorous data quality controls. To uphold our high standards, we have developed specific protocols that rigorously maintain all key dimensions of data quality, such as validity, accuracy, completeness, consistency, and uniqueness. Validity is ensured by strict adherence to a predefined schema and constraints, making certain that each entry in our dataset conforms exactly to expected formats and values. Accuracy is maintained by benchmarking data against control datasets, enabling us to set precise thresholds and triggers for key variables, thereby ensuring that our data mirrors the true state of observed phenomena. The completeness of data is constantly monitored to guarantee that no critical information is missing, thereby avoiding skewed analyses and decisions. Consistency across data entries is verified through regular checks that prevent and resolve discrepancies within our datasets. Lastly, uniqueness is assured by implementing checks that eliminate duplicate entries, ensuring every data point is distinct and accurately represents a unique entity. #MotionAnalysis #Innovation #URochesterResearch #BiomedicalEngineering #BME #DataScience #DataQuality University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry University of Rochester BME (Biomedical Engineering) American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) University of Rochester Medical Center American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Orthopaedic Research Society Goergen Institute for Data Science (GIDS)

A recent study published in Annals of Surgery evaluated the quality of narrative feedback in surgical residency programs at Queen's University. Analyzing 3,900 assessments over five years, it was found that only 57% of these feedback entries were of fair quality, with an average Quality of Assessment of Learning (QuAL) score of 2.22±1.39. The study highlights that feedback quality did not significantly evolve over time (r=-0.067, P=0.402). Factors impacting feedback quality included the attending's role, the assessor’s and learner’s concordant specialties, and the timing of assessment post-encounter. These findings suggest a critical need for ongoing faculty development to enhance the effectiveness of formative assessments in competency-based medical education programs. #FutureFriday: So, you want to be a surgeon👨⚕️🔪? "There is need for more #engagement with surgeons in training to understand their needs and ambitions and greater awareness of the need for #equality, #diversity, and #inclusion in the delivery of surgical care as well as among those who provide it" In his presidential address for the European Surgical Association (ESA) Professor Ronan O'Connell discusses some important (#generational and engagement) issues. (The above suggestion is obviously meant for the current generation of surgeons...) Professor O'Connell addresses other important points, for example: "how can we attract, mentor, nurture, and retain those who would be the next generation of surgeons." 👶 👨⚕️ 🔪 #futuresurgeon --> the challenge is to develop training pathways that can accommodate the needs and ambitions of the #nextgeneration, male and female. Pregnancy, childbirth, family life, and less than full time training must be accommodated. --> one algorithm cannot suit all while conversely, not all who enter will have the ambition, stamina, or psychomotor skills to complete surgical training. --> one that allows rewarding professional careers for those who choose a #worklifebalance in keeping with their personal circumstances, while not inhibiting those who strive for a more intensive surgical career. and "with more than 50% of medical students being #female, we must address gender imbalance and family concerns that effect women more than men" Thanks professor O'Connell for addressing these important issues and pointing us towards a healthy and durable #surgicalfuture! #engagement #futuresurgeon #europeansurgicalassociation Future Surgeon Groene Hart Ziekenhuis De Geneeskundestudent De Coassistent De Jonge Dokter Dutch Surgical Society for Medical Students VAGH De Jonge Specialist Nederlandse Vereniging voor Heelkunde Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) Floortje Huizing Vincent Sier Jaco Tresfon Heleen Snijders Marald Wikkeling MD MBA Begüm P. Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon sub-specializing in Athletic Injuries | Investor | Teacher | (aspiring)Surgical Artist | Researcher | Podcaster | Co-founder of "Indications" | "The sole of orthopedics👟"
How do you approach teaching X-rays? Great post from Jan S. My approach?? Start with the basics such as what the views are, right/left, etc. then I think describing fracture characteristics (transverse, diaphsyeal, displacement), then I think you can venture down the Weber/Lauge Hansen classification discussion. I know classifications aren’t perfect but it is amazing that we haven’t had another one proposed (outside AO classification)
Director of Orthopaedic Trauma @ IU Health Methodist | Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery, Foot and Ankle Surgery, Reconstructive Surgeon
In my previous post (https://lnkd.in/gFp4mzbs), we discussed the importance of anatomy for medical students. Physicians, surgeons, and healthcare professionals from around the world provided many great insights. Another important aspect of orthopaedic education is evaluating X-rays. What is your method for teaching X-ray evaluation/presentation? Should we be stressing classification systems, ie, Lauge Hansen? The x-rays below are from an early 30's male. How would you describe them? Nicholas Strasser MD 👟 William Crawford, MD FAAOS Renee Genova, MD, FAAOS PD Dr. med. Michael C. Tanner
