Conviction and acceptance are best gained through functioning and successful practical examples. There are many so-called "lighthouse projects", but most of them are only known to a small, interested community. One example worth mentioning is the EU project #CEFoodCycle, which was launched to network actors in the food industry and support them on the way to the #circulareconomy. The stakeholders from the five partner countries (Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and France) benefit from know-how transfer, networking and the use of a digital, intelligent decision support system based on life cycle indicators. The activities are aimed at parties that are directly and indirectly involved in the food cycle, such as production companies, retailers, hotels and energy suppliers. The project will enable the various stakeholders to think about resource and CO2 savings and to strengthen the competitiveness of sustainable circular economy in the Alps. Allowing new thinking opens up completely new perspectives and opportunities! It takes courage, commitment and a strong will to implement. 3 days, 1 mission: Prepping our food waste warriors for B Corp certification. Their expertise and support have been the cornerstone of our progress. Happy National Earth Day! Today, we're celebrating our commitment to sustainability by showcasing how our practices at The Strip make a positive impact on the planet. Let's start with our honey: produced right here on our High Tech Campus Eindhoven by our industrious Carnica bees. They start with 10,000 bees on the shortest day and grow to 50,000 by the longest day. Twice a year, in spring and summer (July/August), they make delicious honey. It's pure and unfiltered, showing off all the different plants and flowers on our campus.  At The Strip, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Supporting local entrepreneurs enriches our community while using local and seasonal ingredients reduces carbon emissions from transportation. Our commitment to sustainability doesn't stop there, we're all about reducing waste. With eco-friendly packaging like Billie cups, we're saying no to unnecessary waste. We are proud to partner with suppliers like Bidfood Netherlands, Chokbites, and Join the Pipe Foundation. Their commitment to providing high-quality, organic ingredients aligns perfectly with our values and supports the local farming community. And there's more! Our commitment to plant-based proteins isn't just about offering delicious and nutritious options; it's a conscious choice to reduce our carbon footprint and promote a greener future. We prioritize reducing food waste that's why we use Winnow, an AI tool that helps us track and optimize food waste, and partner with Too Good To Go to sell leftover meals at a lower price. Instead of throwing away food, we make delicious and healthy dishes like no-waste soups, crostini from leftover bread, and more. We also work with Instock to order surplus ingredients that would otherwise go to waste. ❓ Should upcycled ingredients and food become the new normal? ❗ The resounding answer to this question was YES from the audience present at the Foodvalley Upcycling Community Hub during Circular Economy Week on the 13th of March 2024. ♻ The role of circularity within food systems is not always a top priority among stakeholders influencing the future of the agrifood chain, despite the staggering fact that a third of the annual food produced worldwide (1.3 billion tonnes) is lost or wasted. 🍴 These losses occur throughout the value chain from farm to fork, making preventing food loss and waste a paramount concern. 🗝 Key takeaways: - Biomass, the foundation for various applications, should be prioritised with logical destinations in mind. - Upcycling has the potential to reduce the environmental footprint of the agri-food sector significantly. - Developing new business models for upcycled ingredients and food, and creating the right conditions in the market and supply chain, present significant challenges. 🚀 Together, we are working towards a future where upcycled ingredients and food are more prevalent on the shelves.
