Conviction and acceptance are best gained through functioning and successful practical examples. There are many so-called "lighthouse projects", but most of them are only known to a small, interested community. One example worth mentioning is the EU project #CEFoodCycle, which was launched to network actors in the food industry and support them on the way to the #circulareconomy. The stakeholders from the five partner countries (Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and France) benefit from know-how transfer, networking and the use of a digital, intelligent decision support system based on life cycle indicators. The activities are aimed at parties that are directly and indirectly involved in the food cycle, such as production companies, retailers, hotels and energy suppliers. The project will enable the various stakeholders to think about resource and CO2 savings and to strengthen the competitiveness of sustainable circular economy in the Alps. Allowing new thinking opens up completely new perspectives and opportunities! It takes courage, commitment and a strong will to implement. However, the 5 winners show what is possible and that the circular economy will be the future! #circulareconomy #foodwaste #sustainability #netzero

How do we work on halving foodwaste? One of the solutions is regarding unavoidable foodlosses not as waste but as still valuable and nutritious ingredients to be upcycled to food! It already has cost so much energy in production so therefore these sidestreams must be upcycled to food and food ingredients. How can we work on making this the new normal! We know! I am very proud of the great work of the Foodvalley NL team and all our Upcycling Community partners and ecosystem partners joining forces in the shared aim of making the use of upcycled food and ingredients the new normal in retail and foodservice offerings! 👏 📣 In writing the Position Paper on Upcycled Food and Ingredients published today on how to make upcycling to food and ingredients the new normal and the new UPcycled4Food Initiative launched today at the Halving Foodwaste Conference. 🚀 We work in practice on transitioning together with our partners towards a more circular agrifood economy! Do you share this ambition and want to support the Position Paper and/or join the UPcycled4Food Initiative, you are most welcome, please contact us via our website!Read more on what and how in the post below!👇 And follow the initiative via: https://lnkd.in/eRAdNXsm #upcycling #circularagrifood #innovation #circulareeconomie #halvingfoodwaste #UpcyclingFoodMonth #UpcyclingDay #UPcycled4Food
📣 New Foodvalley initiative: Upcycled4Food! Today during the international conference 'Towards Halving Food Waste in Europe', we launched the Upcycled4Food Initiative alongside Foodvalley’s Upcycling Community partners and other organisations. We welcome this research from the World Economic Forum: "It is now compulsory for all homes and businesses in France to recycle their organic waste." In our opinion, this research clearly shows that the impact of food waste is beyond currently accepted knowledge and that pollution and carbon emissions are greatly affected by the food waste global epidemic which is estimated to be worth at least $1 trillion which is more than 1% of the World GDP. France is not the first country to bring stringent laws regarding mandatory food waste transformation into composting or bio-gas. As 1/3rd of annual food waste is wasted globally which accounts for very high CO2 emissions and deforestation, such laws are the need of the times. Technological Innovation, motivation, realisation alone cannot achieve anything if the government doesn't support it.

💚🥕🥔 Bravo France! 👏 ------ In the UK, meanwhile, mandatory food waste segregation / recycling for all businesses was set to come into force from 2023, but a date has yet to be published... My local council doesn't even offer household food recycling! Some context: ➡️ Globally, almost 30% of total food produced is wasted. (WRAP) ➡️ Food waste currently accounts for about 10% of total man-made GHG emissions. (IPCC) ➡ Food waste makes up around half of global food system emissions. (Carbon Trust) ➡️ Reducing food waste and eating plant-rich diets are the top 2 most impactful individual climate actions we can take. (Project Drawdown - cumulative over 30 year period) 🌱 We MUST make food waste a priority of we are to have a chance of reducing emissions. In the meantime, some tips for reducing food waste at home: ✅ Only buy what you need 🛒 ✅ Meal plan 📋 ✅ Batch cook and freeze 🥘 ✅ Use leftover veg in soups, sauces, casseroles, curries etc. 🥣 ✅ Compost any plant-based food waste ♻️ #foodwaste #veganuary #plantbased #climateaction

In France 🇫🇷, composting🍠 🍲food waste is now compulsory! 🗑️🚮 They use the food waste to produce biogas⛽, as well as natural fertiliser 🌽 Way to go! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 #climatechange #climatesolutions #climateaction

Great step in the right direction... all we need now is product innovation with mini composting units that can handle organic water from small apartment dwellers

😎 Good to see Aotearoa is also making positive changes around food waste too, with a number of initiatives on the horizon to normalise waste minimisation in our communities, including: - standardising materials collected from households for recycling the same across Aotearoa New Zealand from 1 February 2024 - making food scraps collection services available to households in all urban areas by 1 January 2030 (for councils with an existing organics processing facility nearby, food scraps collection services will need to be available by 1 January 2027). - looking to get businesses ready to separate food scraps from general waste by 2030. Central government support is important. But do you think there are ways we can accelerate waste minimisation in our community? We would love to hear from you? 😍

Tech innovation is central to helping prevent food waste 👨💻 ➡ ♻ It was encouraging to read about OSY Group’s flagship technology trials getting under way in four continents 🗺 The tech aims to extend the shelf-life of fresh produce 🥗 and reduce food waste and is one of multiple examples of innovative tech 💡 from the UK and Ireland that has the potential to chip away at the food waste mountain 🌄 OSY has struck a deal with 21 partners in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and India for commercial testing projects of an antimicrobial packaging coating called Xtend that enables food items to stay fresh for longer. It leaves microscopic pins on packaging surfaces which, in turn, puncture and kill microbes and therefore slow down the natural spoiling process that affects what’s inside 💭 With roughly one-third of all food produced going to waste which contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions, it is a noble move by OSY. The trials are being conducted by grocers 🛒, packaging firms, exporters 🏢 and other companies 🏭 across the food chain, with a focus on fruit and veg, meat, fish, poultry, bread and fresh flowers 🐟 🥩 🍗 🥕 🍏 🍞 💐 Good luck to them we say ☘ . The problems companies like OSY (and everyone at Gander globally) are trying to solve need addressing from all angles, and it will take an ecosystem of like-minded organisations to help make inroads and make positive change. It’s one of the reasons we have signed waste prevention not-for-profit WRAP's Courtauld Commitment 2030. Signatories are all trying to make food and drink production more sustainable 💚 , and grouping together in such a way enables collaborative action across the entire UK food chain that will give us a chance of meeting the industry’s and, indeed, the nation’s environmental goals 🚀 Gander Australia Gander Brasil #TechInnovation #RetailTech #Technology #Innovation #FoodWasteReduction #Sustainable #PositiveChange #CollaborativeAction #EnvironmentalGoals #PreventFoodWaste #RaiseAwareness #SupportInnovation #Communication
