Howard University hosted a pivotal gathering of senior higher education leaders to discuss recommendations from a ground-breaking report aimed at transforming teaching practices across U.S. universities. The event, organized by the Association for Undergraduate Education at Research Universities, focused on implementing new recommendations from a new report by the National Academics of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Howard University President Ben Vinson III shared the importance of this report, which is titled “Equitable and Effective Teaching in Undergraduate STEM Education: A Framework for Institutions, Educators and Disciplines,” during his opening remarks while also emphasizing the critical need for equity-focused approaches in undergraduate education. Stakeholders across the education system—including state, district, and school leaders, as well as classroom teachers—play crucial roles in advancing equity. The report presents five equity frames to guide decision-makers in setting and achieving both short- and long-term equity goals through informed policy and practice decisions. How will we achieve this? 1.  VJAS Membership is Free. Join now. 2.  VJAS paper submission has been reduced to $35 with a due date submission deadline of February 21, 2025. 3.  The proposed registration package from Ferrum is being worked on but looks to be the following: A. The Day Registration Cost per Participant will be approximately $35, which includes the campus use fee, usage costs, and the cost of lunch for the participant. B. Overnight dormitory costs for students, chaperones, and parents will be determined later in January. C. In this article from VP of Global Educational Strategy Jason McKenna, he advocates for an early start to STEM education. 🧠 He explains that by the age of 6, many children already perceive computer science, engineering, and physics as male domains and emphasizes that "early exposure to STEM is essential to combat these stereotypes and foster an inclusive, equitable future in STEM fields." David Rosowsky has captured one of the root causes of many of US higher ed's challenges: “In chasing one another, and tending toward the same model and mission, colleges and universities are losing their distinctiveness and their ability to serve different audiences effectively.” He explains how institutions are pursuing the same model, their mission statements are indistinguishable from one another, they are organized and function similarly, and they pursue the same ideal, usually hoping for higher rankings. This is occurring while there is a drop in high school graduates and public perception of higher ed is low. There are signals that a handful of institutions recognize the problem with the excessive homogenization he describes so well. New institutions launched over the past decade have typically been distinctive and meet the needs of potential students whose needs are not being met now. Also, some existing institutions are moving towards a more distinctive identity. #highereducation #innovation https://lnkd.in/eyxnkKfb
