Headlining this week's CHC.NewDirections, a CHC.Newsflash xtra: Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and healthtech company Embr Labs have created a machine-learning algorithm to predict a menopause-related hot flush before it is perceived. UMass Amherst researchers generated the “first of its kind” predictive algorithm after applying machine learning to the largest data set of digital biomarkers for hot flushes ever collected. The predictive sensor technology will be combined with Embr Labs’ patented wearable device, Embr Wave, to provide immediate cooling to the wearer to reduce or fully alleviate an anticipated hot flush. Embr Wave was launched early in 2023 as a thermal wearable for relief of menopause symptoms. Director of the IALS Center for Human Health & Performance, Mike Busa, described the new system as a “reactive digital drug” for hot flush symptoms. He said the technology is “fundamentally different” from most other wearables: “This concept of automatic intervention based on real-time physiological symptoms is relatively unexplored. What has dominated the landscape up to this point is only tracking [...] but a major limitation is that it does not provide real-time automated intervention to the person who is dealing with impactful symptoms.” Matt Smith, co-founder and CTO of Embr Labs said: “Seeking immediate cooling relief is a person’s natural reaction when they are having a hot flush. We now have the know-how and technology to bring this solution into the 21st century: personalised and automatic hot flush management from a small, AI-powered, wearable device.” Embr Labs was recently awarded a patent for the utilisation of biomarkers to activate cooling for hot flushes, and an additional patent has been filed for features powering the corresponding predictive algorithms. We’ve spent hundreds of hours mapping out the brain activity associated with different mental states to create a dynamic system of mental experiences.    As a result, we have been recognized as a prime device that is "revolutionizing how we manage Menopause symptoms".
