I recently read "Escaping the Housing Trap" by Charles Marohn & Daniel Herriges. This book dives into the conflict between housing as an investment and housing as, well... shelter! The authors explore alternative solutions for communities to create more affordable and sustainable places to live. Intrigued by shifting our perspective on housing? This is a must-read for anyone interested in community development and building strong towns! #HousingCrisis #CommunityPlanning #BookRecommendation #Housing #CommunityDevelopment

At Landcom, we understand that community engagement and transparency are fundamental to successful development. That’s why we have consulted with residents in Edmondson Park South West Sydney and Mullumbimby Northern Rivers, to gather valuable feedback on our new 100% affordable housing projects. These initiatives are part of our broader goal to create 1,800 affordable homes by 2029, in partnership with the community housing sector. We know that affordable housing can sometimes be misunderstood, leading to community concerns. We believe that proactive, transparent engagement is key to overcoming these misconceptions. By fostering open dialogue, we aim to build trust, understand issues, and shape our development plans to align with community needs. Through authentic community engagement, we aim to inform, involve, and empower residents, fostering neighbourhoods that are not only affordable but also vibrant and sustainable. Thank you Zanna - there’s a lot to be excited about re #properplanning. I know there are communities worried about increased housing, but things have drifted far too long and the country needs fundamental change. This the first step in reversing the 15 year trend of leaving it to our smallest political units (District Councils) to resolve the UK housing crisis. The crisis, left to drift, has contaminated politics and fed Nimbyism. Today’s reforms are not a panacea and as I write this, there are Councils rushing to get their Plan in to beat the new targets…. but I am hopeful of seeing the following benefits in the next few years: 1. A greater range of sites that allows more housebuilders of all sizes to find opportunities to build; 2. Increased competition amongst sites to reduce house prices and to drive up innovation in the housing market; 3. More housing in close proximity to our most productive Cities to ease recruitment issues, reduce commuting costs and drive up UK productivity; 4. As more sites will need to be found, an increase in allocations in rural areas to provide much needed housing and infrastructure to address rural poverty and to ensure more people other than the wealthy, can choose a rural lifestyle; 5. Thanks to clear housing targets and a focus on strategic planning, I hope to see less taxpayer and client money being wasted on protracted and failing Local Plan Examinations. A right first time approach will also reduce stress for Local Communities who spend more time living under the threat of development than living with the benefits. I meant what I said at the end of my interview that it would be great to see more communities being proactive in identifying sites they could live with and asking up front for the infrastructure they would like to see. #planningreform #nppf #justbuildhomes #newhomes

The adaptive reuse project at Haw Creek Commons in Asheville, North Carolina, exemplifies an innovative approach to community impact. Originally Bethesda United Methodist Church, the building had a dwindling congregation of just six members. But, what may have been more important than the number of congregants was the building’s location—smack in the middle of a bustling neighborhood that lacked spaces for community connection.
