As someone who started here straight out of college, I entered the corporate world of Finance and Investment Banking with limited awareness of its complexities and challenges. The past 2 years have been transformative, offering me invaluable experiences, skills, and relationships. While it is bittersweet to part ways with such a pivotal part of my life, I am excited about the new opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Throughout my tenure, I had the distinct privilege of working across two exceptional teams, each presenting unique challenges that honed my expertise and expanded my skill set. Managing a range of complex financial products—including Fixed Income, Derivatives, Collateral Management (cash and securities), FX Cash, FX Spot, FX Options and FX Forwards—required a deep understanding of market dynamics, risk management, and regulatory requirements. These experiences significantly refined my technical abilities and strategic thinking. Additionally, my involvement with the Deutsche Bank Sports Committee has been a highlight of my time here. Organizing a diverse array of events—from competitive tournaments to wellness programs—allowed me to blend my passion for sports with leadership and event planning. This role was not just about orchestrating activities but about fostering a sense of community and connection within the organization. Leaving Deutsche Bank is a decision made with much reflection, yet I am invigorated by the prospect of new challenges and opportunities. The knowledge, experiences, and relationships I’ve cultivated here will undoubtedly serve as a strong foundation as I embark on this next phase of my career. I recently had the privilege of attending a wonderful RBC appreciation event, to honour my spouse, Valérie Beaulieu, MBA, where Dave McKay, CEO of RBC shared some inspirational and thought-provoking ideas. His comments apply just as much to entrepreneurship, law and other industries as much as banking: 1. Be purposeful - Know what you want and take steps to make it happen. Make your plan and execute. - Are you actively advancing your business's interests? Look at your agenda this week, do those activities advance your dream? If not, consider changing things up a bit. 2. Observe and appreciate the industry and process chains that you know in the goal of breaking up those individual links and seeing where they can be improved. Finding efficiency because you can or because you looked where others didn't. 3. Give or make yourself some space to take time and to focus. 4. Invest energy and time into understanding AI and how you can make a lesser environmental impact in your business and personal lives. - This is where our collective focus should be because of the imminent significant risks and potential benefits at play. 5. Be bold and ambitious. Take risks. Dream big and fail small (or big) to build that personal resilience and confidence that will allow you to thrive; and 6. While his role as "Head of Personal Lending Products at HSBC" may seem like the pinnacle of achievement, Kelvin prefers to define himself by three simple descriptors before his title: Family Guy, Music Lover and Board Gamer. "I prioritize my family and value work-life balance to spend time with my loved ones," he shares. Graduated from Macquarie University in 2008 with a Bachelor of applied finance and Bachelor of Commerce, Kelvin's career achievement has been nothing short of remarkable. 💡I asked Kelvin for his insights for this rapid growth in career, and he shared 2 strategies: 1)   Step out your comfort zone. Kelvin took a leap by enrolling in an executive MBA program at London Business School in 2018. Immersed in a community of influential leaders and invigorating challenges, this experience prepared him to be at new heights of leadership, and also helped him to discover the power of alumni connections. 2)   Prepare yourself for a hypothetic career goal. Early in his journey, Kelvin aimed for the role of COO, driving him to acquire a diverse skill set through various roles. While this goal ultimately evolved, the journey enriched him with invaluable experiences and positioned him for roles teeming with growth opportunities. Kelvin is someone believes in purpose. “You need to work for something that has a purpose. Work for something that brings you purpose. Then you are ready to take up the challenges in your career”.
