Dominion Energy has activated the Dry Bridge Energy Storage, a 20 MW / 80 MWh battery project in Chesterfield County, Virginia. It is now the largest active battery energy storage facility in the state, capable of powering around 5,000 homes. The project, acquired from East Point Energy in September 2021, aligns with Virginia's Clean Economy Act (VCEA), which mandates 100% of Dominion's electricity sales to be emissions-free by 2045. The Dry Bridge project aims to support the integration of renewable energy into the grid by firming up intermittent sources and providing energy during peak demand. This utility-scale storage facility is expected to enhance energy distribution, reducing costs for consumers. Dominion Energy emphasizes the importance of dispatchable resources like Dry Bridge in meeting VCEA targets and ensuring grid reliability. Additionally, Dominion Energy is making strides in solar energy, with a proposal for over a dozen new solar projects, adding 772 MW to the grid. This push toward renewables aligns with the broader goal of transitioning to a clean energy future in Virginia. Last September 2023, "Westinghouse has been selected by the Department of Energy (DoE) to deploy a 1.2 GWh utility-scale Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) system in Healy, Alaska in support of planned wind power". "Enough to supply about 80,000 average American homes with electricity for up to 12 hours. The facility would cost about half that of one using lithium-ion batteries". "The project represents the largest, planned single installation of long-duration energy storage in the United States and will demonstrate how the technology can firm intermittent renewable power at grid scale while also providing local and regional grid resiliency. Pumped Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) solves many of the challenges associated with other long-duration energy storage applications, such as lithium-ion batteries, providing 10 or more hours of reliable energy storage with a simple, safe, cost-effective design in a compact footprint, delivering the lowest levelized cost of storage when paired with wind or solar. Maine is on Track to Meet their Energy Storage Goal! A report by the state’s Public Utilities Commission finds that Maine is on track to meet its goal of 300 MW of energy storage by 2025. Existing storage resources, along with planned projects, will allow Maine to reach this goal. The added storage will benefit the state by making the grid more resilient and allowing for more renewable energy use. Clearway Energy Group Launches First Battery Storage Retrofit in California Clearway Energy Group announced today that its 147-megawatt (MW) Rosamond Central Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Kern County has officially reached commercial operations. Developed and operated by Clearway Energy Group, the Rosamond Central BESS is owned by its public affiliate, Clearway Energy, Inc. (NYSE: CWEN, CWEN.A). This state-of-the-art project is equipped with 4-hour lithium-ion batteries and is strategically situated next to Clearway’s 192 MW Rosamond Central solar farm, which was completed in 2020. Energized! U.S. battery storage capacity is set to skyrocket by 89%, by the end of 2024. Developers are set to bring online a remarkable 30 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, with California and Texas spearheading the increase. Battery storage plays a pivotal role in solving greenhouse gas emissions problems by storing excess power during low demand / high renewable supply periods. Storage projects are both increasing in number and size, with California’s Moss Landing facility leading the pack at 750 MW – the largest in the country! 🔋 The United States is set to exceed 10 GW of energy storage deployments this year, a substantial increase attributed to the scaling of renewable energy sources like solar and wind. The country is on track to reach 49.5 GW of installed and operational energy storage capacity, with over 10 GW expected to be added in 2023 alone. Texas is leading in energy storage project capacity, with about 51% of the nation’s planned, under construction, or installed and operational energy storage in the state. Challenges such as permitting, workforce shortages, and grid infrastructure upgrades need to be addressed to achieve the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory projection of 60 TWh of energy storage by 2050. #EnergyStorage #RenewableEnergy 🇺🇸🌞⚡

“Georgia Power Company said its energy projections for the state now reflect energy growth of approximately 6,600 MW through 2030, up from approximately 400 MW previously forecasted in January 2022. For perspective, the utility said its current load growth projections are 17 times higher than what it forecasted in the 2022 IRP. The utility’s ask in its updated IRP include constructing new conventional plants and procuring power from existing ones, along with the expansion of renewable energy resources, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and new and expanded distributed energy resources (DER).” #InflationReductionAct
