Just The Beginning – A Pipeline Organization’s Post

June is just around the corner, which means ES Scholars (my favorite DEI program) is close enough to touch! Not only does our 3 week summer pipeline program prepare participants for the rigors of law school through two weeks of actual classes run by our amazing Emory law school professor, but it (i) helps participants understand how big law firms work, (ii) provides insight on areas of practice, (iii) helps build interviewing, networking, and resume drafting skills, and (iv) gives participants an understanding of the differences between law firm and in-house legal team careers. This is one post that really should be shared far and wide. 🙂

The US boasts some of the most prestigious law schools globally, acting as springboards for exciting legal careers worldwide. The University of Cincinnati College of Law has earned national recognition, securing the #78 spot in the rankings released by U.S. News & World Report today, rendering it the second ranked law school in the state of Ohio. This advancement not only marks an improvement over previous years but also signals the sustained positive momentum at Cincinnati Law. The annual rankings are based on a variety of factors, which include graduate employment and bar success, faculty resources, the academic achievements of entering students, and opinions by law schools, law professors, lawyers, and judges on overall program quality. Dean Haider Ala Hamoudi, Nippert Professor of Law, expressed enthusiasm with the College's progress overall, as reflected in the latest rankings. "I am pleased by the improvement in our US News rankings to 78th overall, our highest ranking in the past six years. This is an improvement of six spots over last year. “We believe this positive trajectory reflects our increased investment in our students and their success, as evinced by our high bar passage and employment rates. U.S. News released its best law school rankings this week.  Once again, the rankings testify to the incredible momentum at Regent Law.   We jumped 17 spots this year.  And we’ve risen 34 places in the past two years and 39 in the past three.  That puts us among the three fasting rising schools in the nation.  We’ve risen farther and faster than almost anyone thought possible.   But at Regent Law, we prioritize our mission over rankings.   We don’t expect U.S. News to measure the fruit we value most. It’s rewarding to see U.S. News recognize our success.  But it’s even better to know we’re doing it while remaining true to our distinctly Christian approach to legal education.   We’re more committed than ever to creating a Christ-centered community devoted to truth, servant leadership, discipleship, and advocacy.  God is blessing our faithfulness to those commitments.   Thank you to those of you who have prayed for the school, supported the school financially, invested in our students and our mission, and represented the school as alumni. Your efforts over many years allow us to enjoy the incredible momentum we celebrate today.  So, keep praying, and keep investing in our school and our students.  I’m grateful to all of you who worked so hard to prepare this soil over many years—and glad to have shown up just in time for the harvest.  The fire is burning bright.  Together, let’s fan it into flame.  If you'd like to partner with what's happening at Regent Law, use https://buff.ly/3VSdRfc   #ThankYou #RegentLaw

My thoughts on Regent University School of Law and the latest US News rankings:

Your "why" is what matters. I read a post yesterday that advised first-year law students to "seriously consider" dropping out if they weren't at the top of their class. If you ask me, that's terrible advice. Advice so terrible I had to read the post several times to make sure I was reading what I thought I was reading. In full transparency, the "advice" hits a little close to home because per that advice, I should have dropped out. No one was going to hire me apparently (I have been employed uninterrupted in the legal field since Spring semester of my 1L year). My career services would be useless to me. (SLU's Office of Career Services was an invaluable asset throughout law school and after). I might as well be a paralegal. (The fact that I was one of the top two Moot Court student in my graduating year must have been a fever dream). To be honest, after those first semester grades came back, I did consider giving up because of attitudes like this. But, I went to law school because I had a passion for helping people, and I'm so glad I kept going. So, law students? Here's some hard-earned advice from a first semester, C-average student. If you got your grades back and they suck, ask yourself this question alone: Why are you in law school? Did you go to law school to make a bunch of money? Did you go for clout? If yes, then yeah, you should probably quit now. But, I'd recommend that even if you were at the top of your class. Are you in law school because you have a passion for justice? Do you want to make a real difference in people's lives? If your answer to those questions is yes, then by God, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and fight like hell.
