New folks getting into GovCon, and even folks who have been around a while often have cause to say "who's idea was this process?" The answer, often is, no one knows. Sometimes they're decided by committee, no one person has responsibility, but everyone has to follow them, sometimes based on rules, sometimes simply on convention. Do them always make sense? often not at first blush, but they're there for a reason, most often to avoid one risk or another. Sometimes the processes get so convoluted and confounding that they get changed, but more often a newer, faster, "innovative" process is contrived to go around the old one...until that one gets too convoluted and confounding, and the cycle begins again.

Maps are hitting a revolution; let me explain. From Esri's inception of creating GIS to Google Maps's conquest of general mapping, the industry has been at a stalemate, with Esri owning the GIS market and Google owning the consumer mapping market. (Honorable mention to Mapbox as an alternative to Google Maps API.) Finally, things are about to change. Across map technology, I am seeing incredible innovations at the infrastructure and data layers, which signals to me that we are in for an upturn in map technology as a whole. With faster computing, GPUs on most devices, WebGL, and other technologies, the industry is poised for innovation. Enter the Overture Maps Foundation, a collaborative project between AWS, Microsoft, Meta, and the Linux Foundation. This initiative is set to democratize high-quality maps, opening a new world of possibilities that were previously monopolized by the Google Maps API, Mapbox, or Esri. The potential of this collaboration is truly exciting and holds great promise for the future of map technology. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN: Google Maps quality data is available on the most advanced modern infrastructure available for everyone and anyone. I could not be more excited about the innovation behind the scenes because this might bring the first real competition into mappy we've seen in over a decade. Here are some other map technologies I'm particularly excited about: - WebGL Open Source UI Frameworks for spatial data (deck.gl and others) - the rise of vector databases for time and spatial data - AI image recognition on satellite imagery
