AW-Energy's Waveroller technology, which harnesses wave energy to generate electricity while resting on the ocean floor, is poised to revolutionize the wave energy sector. Developed over 31 years since its inception in 1993, the Waveroller has overcome challenges to become a commercially viable clean energy solution. The first commercial Waveroller, a 350-kW unit, was successfully connected to the grid off the Portuguese coast in 2019. Despite harsh marine conditions, the system demonstrated durability and quality during inspections. AW-Energy is currently focused on adapting the Waveroller for serial manufacturing and deployment in WaveFarms arrays. These WaveFarms, comprising 10-24 Waveroller units, will be positioned on the sea bed between 8 and 12 meters deep, within 2 km from the shore. Each Waveroller is designed to produce 1 MW of peak power, with an estimated annual production between 624-813 MWh. The technology boasts a competitive levelized cost of energy (LCoE) of US$100-150/MWh, positioning it favourably against other renewable energy sources like offshore wind. The WaveFarm project is expected to contribute significantly to the European economy, with an anticipated addition of €275 million and the creation of 500 jobs over the next decade. AW-Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Namibian clean energy company for a WaveFarm deployment, indicating potential global expansion. For ages we have known that large-scale renewables are the lowest-cost form of new electricity generation. Today, the new CSIRO/AEMO report into the costs of generation technologies in Australia has added robustness to that notion - by taking into account the INTEGRATION costs of variable renewables using an improved methodology to previous years. This means that the storage and transmission costs required to make variable RE (like solar) reliable at higher renewable energy fractions on the grid - an increasing challenge - is more accurately included in the pricing of those technologies. The results? Variable RE still comes out as the most cost efficient route to meeting our decarbonisation challenges. Project delivery might be challenging in today's environment, but VRE is where we need to keep focussing if we're going to reach net zero (not to mention our renewable target of 82% by 2030) - something I'm passionate to support my clients with at Energetics. The renewable energy sector is surging ahead in 2024, with solar and wind power leading the charge. Solar energy is now the fastest-growing electricity source, thanks to advancements in technology and lower costs. Offshore wind is making big strides too, especially in Europe and Asia. Battery storage is becoming more integrated, helping stabilize energy supply. With strong government policies and significant investments, the future looks bright for renewables. However, challenges like grid integration and reducing reliance on fossil fuels still need our focus. DTEK Group has reached first power for its debut clean energy projects outside of Ukraine, involving one wind and one solar project in Romania. The two Romanian renewable projects form part of DTEK’s plans to 5 GW of installed capacity in the EU by 2030, with Italy, Poland, Romania and Croatia also earmarked for new developments. “Ukrainians have made a clear choice that their future lies inside Europe, and DTEK’s expansion into the EU is living proof of that ambition,” said Maxim Timchenko, CEO of DTEK. “I am exceptionally proud of the teams at Glodeni and Ruginoasa in producing green energy for Romanian consumers. This moment marks is a further step forward in the integration of Europe’s and Ukraine’s energy systems as Ukraine moves towards EU accession.” The 60 MW Ruginoasa wind farm will comprise 10 Vestas V162-6.0 MW turbines in Lasi County, Romania, representing a total investment of €107 million. The 53 MWp Glodeni solar park in Mureș County, Romania, involves a total investment of €43 million. The two Romanian projects are being developed by Netherlands-based DTEK Renewables International (DRI), with construction work beginning last March. At a total cost of €150 million, the two projects will produce approximately 225,000 MWh of clean electricity per annum. Sebastian Burduja, Romanian Minister of Energy, added: “Romania has embarked on building an energy system that is green, affordable, and secure, demonstrating the country’s ambition in this sector, honoring our partnership with the European Union’s Green Deal, and reducing our CO2 emissions long-term. We are delighted to have such important investments and investors in Romania, and we underline once more our key message for all companies in the global energy sector: come on over, Romania is open for business.” DTEK is working with contractors Eximprod Engineering, TRACTEBEL Engineering, and Electromontaj S.A. for the Ruginoasa wind farm, and Ostenweg, Risen, Ideematec, Krone Solar, and EnergoBit for the Glodeni solar park. #cleanenergy
