Kenya gets it. Artisanal mining formalization makes economic sense. There are over 140K artisanal miners in the country, 50K of whom are women. #asgm employs 40K individuals as the largest sub-set. #asm is largely informal, with many miners stuck in poverty traps. Kenya legalized ASM in 2023, a prerequisite to formalization at scale. The country now actively supports and encourages professionalization in the sector, resulting in 130 coops that have been setup as formalization takes hold. The number of coops will keep growing quickly. #coltan, critical for electronics, has been discovered in six counties. The country sees significant GDP potential from coltan #mining. Reko Diq will be a major contributor to Pakistan’s economy which is expected to have a transformative impact on the underdeveloped Balochistan province where, in addition to the economic benefits it will generate, the mine will also create jobs, promote the growth of a regional economy and invest in development programs. The province’s interest in the mine will be fully funded, which means that Balochistan will reap the dividends, royalties and other benefits of its 25% shareholding without having to contribute financially to its construction and operation. During peak construction, the project is expected to employ 7,500 people, and once in production, it will create around 4,000 long-term jobs. Barrick prioritizes the employment of local people and host country nationals at operations worldwide. As of June 2024, the workforce at Reko Diq Mining Company is comprised of 75% Balochistan locals. TWIGA Minerals, a collaboration between the Tanzanian government and Barrick, has revitalized the country's gold mining industry, establishing a model for similar ventures in other developing regions. One of the most impactful projects under this partnership is the Barrick-Twiga Future Forward Education Programme. This initiative has made impressive strides in its first phase, significantly enhancing educational infrastructure across Tanzania. The programme has successfully constructed 374 modern classrooms, 89 dormitories, and 569 sanitation facilities, which will accommodate an additional 49,000 students. The benefits of these improvements are already being felt by the local communities, and preparations for the second phase are in progress. President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced in March that the project would cost 70.5 billion Tanzanian shillings. The upcoming phase plans to build 1,090 classrooms, 1,640 sanitation units, and 270 dormitories across 161 schools nationwide. This initiative aims to strengthen infrastructure in advanced-level government secondary schools, making education more accessible and creating a conducive learning environment. Mark Bristow, President and CEO of Barrick Gold Corporation, highlighted the company's dedication to education during a funding announcement at the State House in Dodoma last year. He noted that Barrick’s Bulyanhulu and North Mara mines have also contributed to improving educational facilities in surrounding primary and secondary schools, as well as technical colleges. The Reko Diq Copper-Gold Project, which is expected to have a 40-year lifespan, is owned 50% by Barrick, 25% by three Pakistani state-owned enterprises, 15% by the Balochistan Province on a fully funded basis, and 10% by the Balochistan Province on a free carried basis.
