Kagem Mining Ltd is based in Lufwanyama, Zambia, and believed to be the world’s single largest producing emerald mine. Kagem is 75% owned by Gemfields, in a model partnership with the Zambian government. A world leading supplier of responsibly sourced coloured gemstones, Kagem aims to emulate the values of Gemfields and operate in a way that contributes positively to the national economy, while taking a leading role in modernising the coloured gemstone sector. We believe that coloured gemstones should be mined and marketed by championing three key values - legitimacy, transparency and integrity. More than being just a mining company, Kagem invests in preservation of environment, health, education and livelihood projects tailored to the needs of the community, with extensive consultation to build lasting, sustainable livelihoods for the community around Lufwanyama. In practice this means building and establishing high performing schools, a clinic, helping to set up farming associations and facilitating training, all with a view to benefiting the community in the short, medium and long term.

GEMFIELDS GUIDE TO GEMS - THE 7CS: CERTIFIED REPORTS When considering purchasing a gemstone, one important factor is the gemmological certificate that comes with it. This is especially important when buying jewellery featuring a significant gemstone. Just as a passport defines our identity, a gemmological certificate is a comprehensive report that details the unique characteristics of a cut and polished gemstone. It’s not intended to grade the quality or value of a gem, but rather, it’s a tool for objectively stating its identity, authenticity, geographic origin, and any treatments applied. These details should align with the seller’s claims, and the value offered should be in line with the market value of similar gems with the same characteristics, ensuring a fair and transparent transaction. Kagem boosts community healthcare The Nkana Health Centre management team have shown their gratitude towards Kagem Mining Limited (Kagem), for the repair of crucial equipment and provision of medical and cleaning supplies, fuel and means of transportation. These donations are helping medical staff improve patient care for the approximately 15,000 community members that the health centre serves. In appreciation of the support provided by Kagem, the Nkana Health Centre Nurse-in-Charge, Mrs Bwalya Nkunde – who received the donations on behalf of the centre – thanked Kagem for the gesture as the items would help serve patients more efficiently. Kagem has donated both medical supplies and equipment to the centre on several occasions; the latest being an assortment of medical and cleaning supplies to Nkana Health Centre amounting to about ZMW 70,130 donated in June this year. The supplies included blood pressure reading apparatus, glucose reading apparatus, thermometers, microscopic slides, ward linen, disinfectants, and other cleaning utensils. GEMFIELDS GUIDE TO GEMS - THE 7CS: CLARITY Gemstones are cherished for their beauty, durability and rarity. While colour contributes to a gemstone’s allure and uniqueness, it is clarity that accentuates its resilience. In the world of gemmology, clarity delves into the presence and nature of inclusions and blemishes within a gemstone, unveiling its origin and journey. In a poetic twist, these marks embody each gemstone’s unique essence, making it uniquely yours. A desirable gemstone will feature inclusions that don’t stand out too proudly but silently contribute to its beauty. Certain varieties of coloured gemstones increase in value due to specific clarity features, whilst too many inclusions will affect a gem’s transparency, brilliance, and even durability. Kagem Mining Limited was awarded a prestigious safety award by the Government of Zambia’s Mines Safety Department, recognising its exceptional achievement of 7,580,144 Lost Time Injury (LTI)-free hours. This landmark accomplishment underscores the emerald mine’s unwavering commitment to strive for workplace safety, employees’ well-being, responsible mining practices and operational excellence. A Lost Time Injury (LTI) refers to any injury sustained by an employee that results in a loss of productive work time. In the mining industry, maintaining a low LTI rate is crucial and challenging due to the nature of the work environment. Achieving LTI-free hours signifies that a company has successfully implemented and adhered to rigorous safety protocols, ensuring the well-being of its workforce and minimising disruptions to operations. At Kagem, the acceptable Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) is ZERO (0). Read more: https://lnkd.in/e7QdXpMC #KagemMiningLimited #SHEQ #Gemfields #ZambianEmeralds
