AGSCAN case study - topographic plan of 60 km² for a wind farm using unmanned technologies! 🌍🛠️ The new project was a challenge because of its scale — we were tasked with laser scanning a 400 km long object with a 150-meter wide corridor near the town of Hlobyne, Poltava region, using a DJI Matrice 300RTK drone with a Zenmuse L1 LIDAR. This is necessary to create a detailed topographic plan at a scale of 1:500 for the design of a wind farm that will slightly improve the energy situation in the region. As part of the project, the AGSCAN team also measured the sagging of the wires at the intersections with the projected communications, which is much faster and better to implement using LIDAR scanning. The work was divided into 2 stages: - Field work: data collection lasted for a month, including laser scanning and wire sag measurements. - Data processing: analysis and preparation of source materials took two months in the office. The project took place from November to March, when the weather conditions in Ukraine posed a challenge to work in the field. Nevertheless, thanks to the experience and technical training of the AGSCAN team, the goals were successfully achieved. The customer received a complete set of information: - Topographic plan DWG format. - DEM (digital elevation model) LandXML format. - Classified point cloud LAS format. - Orthomosaic TIFF format. - GCP The priorities of our team are the speed of data processing and the quality of the information provided, which was achieved thanks to Terra Solid and Civil 3D software. Microstation software with the Terrascan module was used to classify the point cloud, and Autodesk Civil 3D was used to create a topographic plan. LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and point clouds play a crucial role at McClendon Engineering by providing detailed spatial data for a growing number of applications. LiDAR is used for accurate and rapid terrain mapping, allowing our teams to understand the topography of the site. Point clouds generated from our LiDAR data is used to create 3D models that assist in visualizing the construction project, helping with initial planning and design. LiDAR-derived point clouds are integrated into BIM software, enhancing the precision of 3D models. Construction teams can collaborate more effectively, reducing errors and improving overall project coordination. LiDAR scans enable our engineers to compare as-built structures with the original design, ensuring accuracy and compliance. Point cloud data aids in identifying deviations from plans, helping to maintain quality control throughout design & construction.

The brownfield projects that Element6 Solutions specializes in present a number of technical and health and safety related issues. The facilities tend to be old, congested, heavy process plant environments that often involve hazardous chemicals. They are not easy or clean places to work in. When the procedures for using 3D scanning equipment are learned, the scanning itself is relatively straightforward. It was just pubblished our last paper on Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering journal! It describes a novel procedure to assess fragmentation from automatic analysis of 3D photogrammetric models with a commercial software. The resulting distributions match properly mass-based size distributions with relative errors in percentile sizes of 15.5 sd 3.4%, and they can be represented with the simplest form of the fragmentation-energy-fan. As a guideline for reconstruction of size distributions and fines assessment when mass-based data is not available, the lower-fitting limit of 357 mm yields reasonable results (mean errors in pass in the range 5–36%) for the present case. Aerial mapping (known as "photogrammetry and remote sensing") creates a record of roads, landscapes and more along MnDOT highways and interstates. These images and laser readings help inform transportation planning and highway design and are mostly collected using airplanes and, for smaller projects, drones. We combine photography and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) to create maps of the area. The LiDAR image seen here is near White Bear Lake. To collect accurate data, several conditions must be just right: the trees can’t have leaves, the snow must be gone, there can’t be water on the ground and—for photography—the sun has to be out. Explain the technical term (2/4) Point Cloud A point cloud is a collection of data points defined in a three-dimensional coordinate system. Each point in the cloud represents a precise location in space and is typically defined by its coordinates (X, Y, Z) and other attributes such as colour. Point clouds are usually created using 3D Scanning and data capture technology such as photogrammetry and LiDAR and can create a very precise and accurate 3D model.
