We spend a lot of our time with school leaders considering the experience of school. Today was no different. Except that, in a gym full of people, I had the good fortune of sitting next to a young learner from (HTS) Holy Trinity School. For a few moments, we played a game that had been created a few minutes earlier to unpack the experience of school. The game allowed us to tell stories and talk about some of the "snakes" and "ladders" of school life. Here are the questions we considered together: - Share a connection with a person at the school that made you feel welcomed. - Share one tough day. - Share one major setback that made you consider leaving the school. - Share one opportunity that you did not have at the school. - Share an activity or moment that you will always remember. It was such a powerful conversation and reminded Suzette Parlevliet and I once again that true transformation will only occur if we take the time to listen to what the students in our schools have to say about their day-to-day experiences. #experiencestrategy #yellowcar #studentvoice #feltexperienceindicator

🎉 We're Live! 🎉 I'm thrilled to announce the launch of School of Grit - a new social platform dedicated to our active service members and veterans. What It’s All About: School of Grit is built with a mission to connect and support those who serve through financial education and lifestyle content. It's a space designed for sharing knowledge, fostering personal growth, and building a supportive community that understands the unique experiences of service life and beyond. Backstory: While studying at The Ohio State University in Columbus, I met Corey Reiser a driven Army veteran and founder of Early Riser Stays, LLC. Our initial meeting didn't involve School of Grit; that idea came to light months later, after I had graduated and moved back to NJ. It was then that Corey, inspired by his dedication to service, presented his vision for a platform dedicated to aiding veterans and service members. Recognizing my passion for technology and community building, he brought me on as the lead engineer. Despite relocating away from Columbus, our collaboration and the shared goal to extend a helping hand to those who've served have remained strong, bridging all distances between us.. My Role in This Vision: Brought on board by Corey Reiser my task was to bring his vision to life through technology. As the software engineer behind School of Grit, I dedicated myself to constructing a platform that reflects our mission—developing the backend infrastructure, crafting a user-friendly design, and executing the deployment, all within the AWS ecosystem. It was paramount to ensure that every element of the site facilitated community building and resource sharing in an intuitive and engaging manner. What Lies Ahead: The launch is merely the beginning. School of Grit is set to evolve into a vibrant, supportive space where shared experiences and knowledge foster a sense of belonging and progress. It's about creating a community that not only understands but uplifts each other through every life stage and challenge. We're excited to welcome you to School of Grit. Hey, K-12! Happy Tuesday! Who's done with school? Who's almost done? Quick poll: 1. If you're a principal, do you keep in touch with families over the summer? 2. If you're a teacher, do you keep in touch with families over the summer? If the answer is no, here's an argument for why you should reconsider: when we stay in touch, it says, "I care about you." When we don't, it communicates, "Out of sight, out of mind." If we're struggling to hold onto teachers and to students, one simple strategy is to make sure you stay present, as school leader/classroom leader, in the lives of the members of your community throughout the summer.
